Interconnection Engineer Jobs

The Interconnection Engineer will primarily work within the E&C group with supporting project execution and the strategic analysis of interconnection procedures, queue positioning, and transmission system analysis in various RTO/ISO, as well as to formulate and steer greenfield project siting, and prepare/manage interconnection requests through to an Interconnection Agreement with favorable terms. The Interconnection Engineer would work cross functionally with the broader Organization to optimize Repsol’s position throughout a project lifecycle.

The position is based in The Woodlands, Texas, or Downtown Houston with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.

Responsibilities:

• Lead utility status calls, maintain utility relationships, and manage utility performance to tariff deadlines.
• Work with external consultants performing interconnection and transmission studies as well as curtailment and congestion analyses.
• Review and analyze utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and manage a portfolio of utility interconnection applications from initial submission through closeout.
• Analyze interconnection due diligence materials to support project acquisition efforts, identify existing and potential red flags.
• Work closely with the Project EPC, Project Engineers as well as the Project and Business Development tea, to achieve interconnection of utility scale solar and storage projects.
• Support execution and development activities by reviewing transmission system analysis, identifying interconnection agencies and procedures, prepare and file interconnection requests including supporting internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback the team and other internal stakeholders to support any financial and project approvals needed.
• Support the electrical design and interconnection application process for utility scale PV, storage, wind, and hybrid projects, identify reliability and congestion constraints for FERC jurisdictional projects, other non-FERC like ERCOT, and develop integrated solutions.
• Review utility impact studies and upgrade estimates to identify cost or time saving measures.

Required Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in the USA for any employer without sponsorship now or in the future
• Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.
• Working knowledge of NERC planning standards.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
• Knowledge of System Impact Studies (SIS) and other interconnection studies of renewable energy generating facilities with the ISO/SPP markets.
• BS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Understanding of electrical diagrams, preliminary site plans, and preparation of interconnection request packages for submittal.
• Awareness of transmission systems and transmission expansion plans in US.
• Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
• PSSE, Aspen, PSCAD, ETAP or AmpCalc modeling experience preferred.
• Knowledge of Open Access Transmission Tariffs and Generator Interconnection Procedures.
• Experience with substation design and transmission-level power system protection and coordination is preferred.
• Engineering experience specific to electric utility scale renewable projects.
• 3+ years of relevant engineering and technical policy experience including renewable energy design and interconnection tariff structures and business practice manuals.
• Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
• Working knowledge of FERC rules and regulations.
• Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
