Fork Union Military Academy's Mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military structured environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, responsibility and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth. In this mission, our Human Resources Generalist is the heart of our staff leadership and fosters personal development with daily interaction and the ability to support all staff.


Description


The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for the successful completion of all operations concerning staff and faculty. The generalist generates reports, processes payroll, conducts audits, exhibits stellar staff relations, plays an integral role in program development and roll out, and generally advises of legal guidance to be followed. The HR Generalist shall be further willing to adhere to, enforce, encourage, and instruct per the Academy's mission and core values to all Cadets as well as support staff in their efforts to do the same.


Essential Job Functions


Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the implementation of new benefits, programs, policy or procedure as deemed necessary
  • Train support HR roles
  • Work in conjunction with the Academy 3rd party services for all Worker's Compensation and Unemployment items
  • Track progress of applicants
  • Monitor and contribute to live logs as appropriate on the HR specific drive
  • Disciplinary actions, support strategies, performance improvement plans, probationary periods, separation, termination, etc.
  • Oversee the investigation of staff grievances
  • Conduct, and report on results, to yearly audits to include, but not be limited to:
  • Train qualified and selected staff members for redundancy in identified duties and processes as deemed necessary by Academy needs
  • Process and authorize payroll in conjunction with Dominion Payroll
  • Maintain the Academy Employee Handbook, as well as the Housing Handbook based on legal changes and Academy policy changes
  • Make recommendations based on investigation outcome to the Academy to include, but not be limited to:
  • Maintain and oversee the listing of job postings online through the Dominion Payroll iSolved system
  • Oversee all HR staff in support roles
  • Participate in, or oversee as deemed appropriate, investigations related to staff conduct, cadet impact, or any disciplinary issue involving Academy wide staff
  • EEO, NDT, ACA, DASL, etc.
  • Maintain the time clocks as appropriate including onboarding new biometric information as necessary
  • Oversee the development and roll out of new staff programs
  • Process payroll on a bi-weekly schedule
  • Make recommendations to create a positive culture for staff
  • Distribute applications to appropriate hiring managers
  • Oversee the development and roll out of staff trainings as deemed necessary
  • Monitor employment laws
  • Effectively communicate with the investigation committee, upper administration, and legal representation of the Academy based on facts obtained
  • Determine and recommend, per policy, if an investigation is deemed appropriate, and place staff on leave as appropriate
  • Oversee the FMLA, ADA, FSLA
  • Oversee the proper storage of electronic files on the HR specific drive
  • Work in conjunction with Accounting to track the budgeting of payroll
  • Implement, oversee, and maintain the Academy evaluation process and policy
  • Offer proactive solutions to possible changes regarding staff
  • Sit on interview panels as deemed appropriate
  • Maintain and refine the HRIS database as necessary
  • Recommend and roll out policy or procedure updates to best support the legal impact to the school


Duties/Responsibilities


  • Oversee the creation and proper retention of staff files
  • Rotate as appropriate all files housed in the HR Office
  • Maintain the mandated postings board
  • Administer annual contracts and memos as deemed appropriate and necessary
  • Track payroll hours and wage changes
  • Oversee the creation of materials to distribute to staff regarding programs, form updates, legal form updates, training materials, and presentations as deemed appropriate.
  • Oversee benefits enrollment, disenrollment, and monitor for life qualifying events that may impact staff and faculty
  • Document interactions, complaints, and interactions with staff that are deemed appropriate for tracking
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties or responsibility as determined by supervision, administration, or the President's office
  • Counsel on benefits and programs offered by the Academy
  • Practice a high level of confidentiality
  • Offer excellent customer service to all new or existing employees
  • Report all payroll budgetary information to the CFO and Chief Accounting Manager
  • Monitor time and PTO usage for each employee
  • Track bonuses and stipends and the distributions associated with them
  • Educate staff on new programs, policy, procedure as deemed necessary
  • Enter and review all annual wages for pay assuring that the system is up to date and set to process accordingly
  • Be open to communicate with staff on their time offering excellent customer service as often as possible
  • Onboard all new staff and faculty members into the HRIS/Payroll system, the retirement software and benefit portals
  • Stay up to date with state, local, and federal laws to ensure compliance
  • Oversee or moderate, depending on need, any counseling conducted with a staff member

  • Travel to Academy events and professional meetings as deemed appropriate by the CFO, or President's Office

  • Ability to adapt to real time situations, and honor chain of command in real time
  • Problem solving abilities
  • Ability to obtain the following certification if deemed necessary or appropriate by the Academy
  • Detail oriented
  • CPR/Concussion Certification and Child Abuse/Neglect Training


Education And Experience


  • Fork Union Military Academy is a veteran friendly employer
  • Experience interacting with youth programs preferred
  • Must have at least a Bachelor's Degree; Masters Degree preferred
  • Previous experience in HR or related field is required


Physical Requirements


  • Expected hours of work are 0830 to 1630 with after hours or weekend work possible
  • Ability to climb three flights of stairs and carry at least 35 pounds
  • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, walking, or working on a computer may be deemed necessary at any time
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug testing
  • Ability to perform work outdoors; withstand inclement weather and other environmental conditions
  • Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 35 pounds as needed
  • Hours of work may be conditionally flexible during seasonal events, or as directed by the Academy's needs
  • Ability to sit, stand, or squat as needed.
