Performs advanced-level work involving the installation, production, maintenance, cultivation, and licensed chemical pesticide application of the botanical collections, greenhouse displays, and outdoor landscapes, plant life of city parks, grounds, and medians. Performs plant-related tasks, records, and performs plant health evaluations and assessments. May specialize in horticulture work such as permanent plant collections, changing floricultural installations, and work on outdoor gardens, including zoo exhibits. Follows horticulture industry-standard safety practices involving ergonomics, pesticide application, personal protection equipment, and other equipment. Trains and leads the work of volunteers, interns, and other staff to ensure quality plant maintenance, design, and display. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Typical Duties:
- Provides and leads others in providing care to plant collections, greenhouse floriculture crops, and botanical garden displays, and zoo displays, greenhouse floriculture crops, outdoor landscapes, and plant life of city parks, grounds, and medians.
- Uses and maintains hand and power tools and equipment. Maintains an inventory of tools, equipment, and materials as assigned. Makes minor repairs on equipment as needed.
- Applies pesticide to plant collections, botanical garden displays, and greenhouse floriculture crops. Assists with maintenance of chemical and fertilizer inventories and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) compliance records.
- Drives and operates motorized vehicles safely and efficiently as assigned.
- Reviews, edits, and develops short presentations for public presentations or onsite programs.
- Designs pots, gardens, exhibits, or displays.
- Leads, as assigned, horticulture work such as tropical or temperate plant collection, specialized botanical or landscape garden displays, zoo exhibits, or production of greenhouse floriculture crops.
The eligible list created from this assessment will also be used to fill additional Horticulturist II positions as they become available.

Requirements may be met by one of the following:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or a closely related plant science degree such as botany, agriculture, greenhouse management or floriculture; and two years of experience in horticulture or a related industry, not including sales.
- Six years of experience in horticulture or a related industry, not including sales.
- An Associate’s Degree in Horticulture or a closely related plant science degree such as botany, agriculture, greenhouse management or floriculture; and four years of experience in horticulture or a related industry, not including sales.
Must have a Minnesota Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (written tests part A and E) within six months of the date of appointment.
