Horticulturist Jobs

High Point University is currently seeking a full-time Horticulturist. The Horticulturist is responsible for day to day management of the Gardens and Arboretum and a private residence associated with High Point University. This position is under the supervision of the Curator of the Grounds, who will determine activities at each location. Time spent at each location will vary by season, but will average 2 to 3 days a week at the private residence. This position will also assist the Curator with mapping & labeling efforts in the gardens as well as other projects which may arise.

• 4 or 2-year degree in Horticulture and minimum 2 years practical experience maintaining gardens and landscapes or 3 to 5 years equivalent experience in the field

• Experience with effective problem solving of pest and weed problems including obtaining a NC Pesticide License. This can be attained through High Point University
• Experience in garden inventory and labeling
• Experience with proper horticultural practice techniques

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage and train staff
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint and Excel)
• Capability to meet deadlines and work in a fast paced environment
• Ability to thrive in a team environment
• Strong organizational and planning skills
• Ability to understand, apply and teach basic principles of horticulture, plant science and botany to staff, students and volunteers

• Oversees and manages student workers and volunteers in the gardens
• Transplants, prunes, monitors and maintains a variety of plant materials according to proper horticultural practices
• Supports Curator with garden tours for visitors and special interest groups
• Monitors and maintains irrigation systems and coordinates with Irrigation Technician when appropriate
• Assists with maintaining garden records, including database inventory, labels and mapping.
• Ensures all equipment is maintained and kept in proper working order
• Assists with management of offsite nursery & greenhouse

• Collaborates with and advises Special Events Team on flowers and plants for special events; ensures the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are maintained and ready for all University functions
• Other duties as assigned
• Maintains positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with students, students’ parents, faculty, co-workers and managers

• Reports to the Curator of Grounds and is responsible for the day to day management of the Gardens & Arboretum
