DESCRIPTION
Department Overview:
The mission of the The Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to lay the groundwork for the scientific foundations of the emerging discipline of data science, develop new methods and infrastructure, and train students, faculty and industry partners to use data science in ways that will allow them to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. HDSI has been established as an independent and innovative academic unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, students and faculty across multiple disciplines throughout the entire campus.
HDSI has 22.66 Faculty FTE on board, through a headcount of more than 48 faculty with split appointments in multiple departments. This highly talented data-driven ecosystem of thought leaders is only expected to grow in the coming years. HDSI is the administrative home for the undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and three new graduate programs; Master of Data Science Online, MS in Data Science and PhD in Data Science. The undergraduate program has 1,000+ students across our major and minor programs. Our newly launched graduate programs are home to 199 MS students, 44 of which belong to our Online Master of Data Science degree, and 40 PhD students.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of External Relations, the Graphic Designer/Content Curator provides graphic design solutions for HDSI. The incumbent will plan, prepare, design, and execute compelling, visually appealing graphics for print and digital communications, for a variety of outlets and communication channels, that adhere to university branding guidelines and are of the caliber and character to properly convey the image of HDSI as the preeminent leader in academic data science.
Using general design/technical knowledge, the designer will meet with internal clients to define needs, create timelines, and distill complex concepts to conceptualize and create original imagery, format documents, review and finalize files for digital distribution or print production. The Graphic Designer will apply expertise with graphic design/desktop publishing software, including Adobe Creative Suite and others, to produce illustrations, images, motion graphics, digitally retouch images, visualizations, and photographs for proposals, reports, presentations, posters, social media campaigns and other print/digital formats.
Referring to the digital content curation portion of the role, the incumbent will development processes and content for a sustained social media presence and establish a regular cadence of posts across multiple platforms. Social media content shall be consistent with HDSI and UC San Diego's image as a highly-regarded academic institution.
The Graphic Designer will supervise several student staff members involved in photography and videography, web development, and social media management. The incumbent will work closely with all external relations staff to provide excellent customer service and quality of work. The graphic designer will independently work on brand identity and development, create style guides, and adhere to university branding guidelines. The Graphic Designer will apply well-developed consultative skills to advise and make recommendations to student workers, faculty, and staff regarding the implementation and production of design projects.
While design, brand development, and illustration will comprise the majority of work, the position will perform other related work consisting of communication plans for projects and basic web design, including the review and maintenance of the department website's visual assets to ensure uniformity, accuracy and a positive image/brand, and creating custom website graphics and advertisements for the website and partners, when appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience with website development and UI/UX best practices. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, WordPress and/or Drupal or similar website platforms is preferred. Knowledge of current web trends.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in use of various software, programs, and operating systems: MacOS, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva, Social Media platforms, Web Development Tools and content management systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
- Ability to mentor and supervise student staff.
- Strong design, creative and artistic skills, including graphic design, illustration, and brand development for digital and print purposes.
- Experience finding, preparing, and editing photos, illustrations, and other graphics for print use.
- Bachelor’s degree in design or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Three years of full-time experience in graphic design.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
- Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $64,498 - $97,489 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.89 - $46.69
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
