Government Affairs Specialist

INDA, Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry

Washington, DC area (remote)

INDA, a national trade association based in Cary, NC, is seeking a Government Affairs Specialist to work under the direction of the Director of Government Affairs and handle a portfolio of federal and state legislative and regulatory issues. The ideal candidate should have wide-ranging experience in state, federal, and international government affairs and communications. The position is expected to work remotely from the Washington, D.C. area with regular government affairs-related travel and some travel to INDA conferences and events. Exceptional candidates based elsewhere in the United States will also be considered.


INDA is in the process of growing its government affairs program and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with the Director of Government Affairs to develop a strong and proactive program. The day-to-day activities of this position may include responding to member inquiries on regulatory and international trade matters, engaging on state legislation concerning disposable wipes labeling, and participating in state and federal policy coalitions, facilitated by organizations such as the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Chemistry Council. It is expected that the specific day-to-day responsibilities of this position will be tailored to fit the background of the successful applicant.


Overview


General Duties

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Conduct state and federal legislative and regulatory tracking
  • Engage with relevant INDA committees and external coalitions
  • Manage advocacy communications such as drafting newsletters, press releases, written and oral testimony, and comment letters
  • Manage a portfolio of state and federal issues
  • Manage lobbying filings and disclosures, and handle other administrative needs of the department


Federal Affairs

  • Manage state lobbying efforts in an assigned region
  • Assist engagement with congressional offices on key industry issues on behalf of INDA and through coalitions
  • Manage INDA’s federal regulatory efforts by interfacing with and providing comments to agencies such as the EPA, FDA, HHS, Commerce Department, and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
  • Testify (both virtually and in person) before state legislatures as necessary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and success in
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in government affairs or public policy, trade association experience a plus
  • Ability to travel to events, conferences, and meetings as necessary (estimated 10-20% travel)
  • External-facing public and media relations environments
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Experience working in the manufacturing sector and/or with chemicals regulations a plus
