Gis Technician I Jobs

Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs basic geographic information systems (GIS) analysis on military and natural resources data. Support ongoing GIS data development and sustainment projects.

Responsibilities

• Assists in building routine databases by capturing map information with a coordinate digitizer.
• Support analysis of public works and environmental data in support of product development and new business opportunities.
• Assists in writing basic software routines to facilitate analysis.
• Applies basic software to manage spatial and related tabular data.
• Assists in planning, designing, developing documents and in analyzing basic spatial and relational databases.
• Produces computer map products depicting contents of databases.
• Assists GIS Analyst and management team with the creation, update and correction of personal and distributed GIS databases, project tracking databases, and technical reports to support daily and ongoing project activities.
• Performs digitizing, attributing spatial and tabular data, customer support including manipulation of raster and vector data using COTS and customized geoprocessing tools, GIS map creation to meet required standards, graphic and design work utilizing Adobe and Autodesk products, and some application development.
• Assists in preparing technical research.
• Locates sources of GIS data from Government, state agencies, and private companies. Operates computer workstations, digitizers, printers, and plotters following directions. Creates basic user applications and interfaces using various programming languages. Assists in analyzing image data using basic image processing software.

Required Qualifications

• Effective troubleshooting and analytical skills
• Must be able to obtain access to a military and other government facilities
• Ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical information
• Effective problem solving skills to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
• Proficiency in the use and application of the following required software: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook)
• Organizational and multi-tasking skills
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Minimum of 1 year experience in basic computer operations
• Ability to read, listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences.

• 3-5 years of professional hardware/software end-user support
• Experience with relational databases, application programming and development support
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Working level knowledge of ESRI software
• Experience with GPS technology

• Frequent standing, sitting, walking, handling, feeling with hands, reaching with arms.
• Prolonged use of computer, (typing, keyboarding, data entry)
• Speak clearly in person and over the telephone
• Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
• Noise conditions range from very quiet to some noise.
• Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
• A portion of the duties may require working outdoors under extreme temperature, strenuous physical effort associated with hiking conducting GPS surveys, such as climbing steep slopes, and physical labor such as stooping, bending, carrying loads in excess of 50 pounds
