Position Summary
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center and Orange Coast Medical Center. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center’s and Orange Coast Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.
The Genetic Counselor Assistant works under the direction of the program Executive-Director and Genetics Counselors and supports implementation of service program for Cancer Risk and Prevention Program and associated activities. This position is responsible for assisting the genetic counselors with daily patient scheduling based on risk acuity of patients, completion of pre-appointment activities such as chart review and preparation, data abstraction, and verification of insurance authorization, direct patient care activities such as communication with patients about scheduling of counseling and lab appointments and coordination of services with ancillary support services and post-appointment activities such as dissemination of genetic counselor reports to providers and patients and disclosure of negative results to patients as assigned by the genetic counselor. In addition, this position is responsible for tracking patients as they move through the genetic counseling process to ensure timely appointments and complete follow-up and to communicate delays, barriers and possible solutions to the genetics counselor and/or executive director. The incumbent is expected to maintain and track patient data for administrative reports and to ensures adequate inventory of medical and office supplies.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
1. Receives and processes referrals to Genetic Counseling in a timely manner.
2. Assists Genetic Counselors (GC) with medical records analysis of clinical risk assessment, clinical recommendation and/or referrals based on American College of Radiology (ACR) practice guidelines, National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines and other recognized approved practice guidelines to support program required achievements.
3. Assists Genetics Counselors with tracing patients through the genetic counseling process and maintains department data and statistics.
4. Supports Health Care Team with the daily patient flow, ensure timely appointment turnaround time.
5. Maintains adequate availability of medical and office supplies always utilizing MC21 Lean process.
6. Coordinates with ancillary team to support financial payer aspects, verification of insurer benefits, authorization, cash pricing options.
7. Communicates with patients verbally and via email regarding logistics of appointments, lab draws, reports and negative results as assigned
8. Submits requests for lab testing to the genetics labs.
9. Identifies problems and barriers and potential solutions and communicates same to genetic counselor and/or executive director.
10. Ability to be at work and be on time.
11. Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives.
12. Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
13. Ability to prioritize and multitask
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Experience with electronic medical records, data abstraction and other patient information
- Knowledge of commercial, government and manage care authorization process
- 2 yrs. experience in a healthcare setting of patient scheduling and clerical support preferred
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Associate Degree in related field preferred
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Card preferred
- Medical Assistant certification preferred
