Stovepipe Wells Village has an 80-room hotel, restaurant, bar, and gas/convenience store/gift shop. Stovepipe is a welcoming, safe and environmentally responsible place that enriches visitors' experience in Death Valley. Over the next few years, the resort will undergo upgrades with rejuvenated accommodations and dining for public enjoyment. The resort operations goal of net-zero will be achieved through innovations such as 100% power from renewable energy and energy efficiency upgrades to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resource conservation in addition to environmental protection of local biodiversity and ecosystems.

Destination Death Valley, LLC is a National Park Service concessioner located at Stovepipe Wells Village in Death Valley National Park, CA.

Job Summary:

The General Manager will oversee the strategic and operational leadership at Stovepipe, in collaboration with POWDR, to manage and establish long-range goals, capital and strategic plans, execute on operating plans and ensure the appropriate policies and procedures are implemented to support the staff and culture. This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of Stovepipe including Operations, Food & Beverage, Retail/Rental Outlets, Sales and Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, and NPS relative operations.

The successful candidate must possess strong and proven strategic leadership, communication, collaboration, innovation, and organizational skills along with understanding the mechanical operation and NPS requirements. They must also embrace the hospitality mindset and incorporate best-in-class employee and guest safety standards into all aspects of the resort.

The General Manager shall cultivate a dynamic management team to implement the Parks ESQ (environment, safety, quality) management system standards and lead efficient cross department, agency, partnership communications among stakeholders to execute full NPS contract compliance, operational, and maintenance requirements at Stovepipe Wells.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic:
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on key issues, determine progress and status towards objectives and drive change when necessary.
  • Collaborate with POWDR's leadership and NPS to develop a comprehensive and robust growth strategy for Stovepipe Wells
  • Budgetary responsibilities include capturing requisite revenue through successful business development strategies and managing expenses.
  • Support development opportunities by working directly with development resources ensuring successful implementation of capital planning projects and on time as set forth by NPS timelines.
  • Develop and execute the strategic plan as set forth via the NPS contract, operating agreement, Parks ESQ system requirements, and through collaboration with POWDR, to advance the Stovepipe Wells and NPS shared mission, vision, and values while promoting revenue growth, profitability, and sustainability.
  • Evaluate and establish operating plans in line with the NPS and Parks ESQ system requirements to support the long-range plan of the organization, introducing new programs/strategies where appropriate to fuel growth, drive operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance. These operating plans include the NPS Environmental Management Program and NPS Risk Management Program comprehensive of the Parks ESQ System.
  • Look for new business opportunities and markets to expand programs as approved by the NPS contractual agreements.
Operations:
  • Responsible for necessary permits for NPS infrastructure, landscaping projects and capital expenditures, with overall responsibility for security, projects and infrastructure.
  • Foster a positive and energetic culture that recognizes and rewards efforts to maximize employee engagement and guest service, and reinforces the Parks ESQ via the process.
  • Promote and foster a culture of innovation and change management, aligning operating processes and procedures to Destination Death Valley mission, value, and vision with the outcome of exceeding our guests' expectations and employee engagement.
  • Mentor and develop business leadership teams in human resources, accounting, lodging, food and beverage, maintenance, retail, general stores, and interacts with the general contractor services for infrastructure upgrades and renovation.
  • Establish, implement, and enforce best-in-class guest and employee safety standards in accordance with company policies and procedures as well as local, state & federal laws.
  • Enhance and/or develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness.
  • Lead and participate in all Resort Leadership Team and Quarterly Planning and Budget/Business Planning Meetings.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with all legal matters including coordinating communications with general counsel, general liability, worker's compensation, property rights, etc.
  • Provide resources to build a thriving leadership team via communication and problem-solving where the various Death Valley departments intersect.
  • Evaluate risk, performance, and key metrics to support a high performing, functional organization to deliver upon NPS and Parks ESQ contractual requirements. Set precedent for departmental leadership communications with NPS to achieve the mutually shared agreements, deliveries and standards of the partnership contract, operating agreement, maintenance plan, etc.
Community:
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative for Destination Death Valley, able to promote the company though media and personal appearances. Represent Destination Death Valley at NPS partner meetings and events, legislative sessions, committee meetings, and at formal functions.
  • Create, participate in, and maintain strong relationships with the NPS, in the local community, key stakeholders, guests, vendors and beyond.
  • Joins the Las Vegas Tour and Travel association and develops relationships with hotel concierges and tour groups to grow the Death Valley Destination business.
  • Establish and/or enhance relationships with NPS, local, state, federal commissions and administrations.
  • Attends National Park Service Hospitality Association conferences, and others.

Work Location:
  • Due to the in-person nature of the hospitality business, this position is on-site.
  • Due to the remote location of Stovepipe Wells and lodging operations 24 hours per day, the GM is expected to live onsite and be the authority for the operations at all hours. The GM is provided onsite housing to fulfill this requirement.
  • Due to the nature of our business, Stovepipe Wells Village is open every day. You must be prepared to work a schedule which may include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle multiple complex tasks in parallel.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to drive performance across multiple concepts through the creation of frameworks, process, and best practice sharing.
  • Proven track record of building and leading high performing teams.
  • Demonstrated track record of effective execution, including revenue growth and profit enhancement through efficient and streamlined operations.
  • 10+ years' experience in the hospitality industry, with proven success in P&L management in a senior leadership role at the resort/property level.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, accounting, marketing, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision with a high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to gender and diversity.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel.
  • Proven track record of innovation and change management, with the ability to quickly pivot business strategies, policies, procedures, and practices to meet business objectives.
  • Sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgement, and strong operational focus.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively in writing and verbally across all levels of the organization and across multiple aspects of the community and industry.
    • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle multiple complex tasks in parallel.
  • Success at building relationships and collaborating cross-functionally across the organization.
  • Working knowledge of computers including MS Office Suite.

Compensation:
  • $130k - $140k DOE
