JOB SUMMARY

The Gang Foreman Training Program is approximately six months in duration and will include both classroom and on-the-job training. Trainees are required to demonstrate competency under all situations. Satisfactory completion of the Training Program will result in the trainee becoming a qualified Gang Foreman. Upon successful completion of the training program, the employee is required to remain in the sub-department (i.e. High Tension) for a minimum of 24 months from the date of the completion. All Gang Foremen are on probation for 18 months. A Gang Foreman is required to plan, lead, and coordinate the work of employees, which may include installation, maintenance and repair of High-Tension equipment including cables, manual switches, electrically operated switches, transformers, poles, cross-arms, and cases. Responsible for the safe and economical use of labor, materials, equipment and tools assigned to their area. In addition, a Gang Foreman is required to ensure that company policy is adhered to and is responsible for the safety and well-being of all employees under his/her jurisdiction.
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct safety observations.
  • Take all necessary steps to maintain safe, reliable train service and to restore interrupted service and vital systems in the most effective manner.
  • Be available for programmed work.
  • Secure and log all tools issued to gang trucks.
  • Monitor material to help reduce inventory.
  • Respond to emergency call outs.
  • Participate in investigations of on-the-job accidents for cause and prevention.
  • Plan and monitor the execution of construction or maintenance projects to ensure safe, satisfactory workmanship, elimination of unnecessary overtime, and that the work progresses promptly; and coordinate where other departments are involved.
  • Monitor vehicle usage forms.
  • Administer progressive testing and evaluations for newly hired employees (ex: pole climbing).
  • Maintain a daily log of all gang activities.
  • Prepare material charge-outs.
  • Ensure safety meetings are held on schedule and all problems are addressed.
  • Complete time and labor reports for members of assigned gang.
Qualifications
  • Candidates must have completed 4 years of LIRR service and have worked in the High-Tension Department within the last 3 years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the National Electric Safety Code and LIRR CE-1, Sections 5 and 6.
  • Must be a qualified High-Tension Lineman/Cable Splicer currently in the Department.
  • A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to assume and handle responsibility.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Required to participate and attend MECC Training Program, in addition to other classes identified to assist in the enhancement of supervisory skills.

Other InformationIn addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. Absence control violation(s) or more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
