The Network Engineering Team in NREL Information Technology Services has an opening for a full-time full-stack developer to assist in the development and delivery of infrastructure automation workflows and statistical reporting.

NREL is looking for a dynamic, motivated team member who can manage projects, lead development in IT automation activities, and communicate with external stakeholders to determine requirements. Candidates should have a strong technical background, experience coordinating within small teams and working with clients, and an interest in the mission of NREL.
The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL ITS staff and researchers, other national laboratories, and universities. Efforts will include developing and providing automated infrastructure solutions at scale, API gateways for ITS and operations and research projects. In addition to specific skills, candidates should demonstrate a high degree of curiosity, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to learn and adapt to the automation operations and research needs.
Successful applicants will be able to operate independently and perform technical tasks with a high degree of rigor and professionalism. This includes tackling technical challenges and engineer creative solutions for infrastructure automation problems, and help design a long-term vision for operational and research needs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Our team utilizes a variety of technologies, and the preferred candidate would demonstrate experience in a subset of the skills below:
Development:
As well as demonstrate experience in automation workflows:
  • Experience using visualization tools such as Plotly, Seaborn, etc.
  • PostgreSQL/SQL
  • Experience with visualization tools such as Grafana or other open source tools
  • Experience in automation and orchestration tools such as Jenkin’s and Ansible
And:
  • Skilled in analytical techniques, practices and problem solving
  • Extensive programming and architecture abilities with various computer software programs and information systems
  • Applies extensive IS expertise in specific field and has knowledge of related disciplines

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Excellent leadership and project management skills. Skilled in analytical techniques and practices, and problem solving. Extensive programming and architecture abilities with various computer software programs and information systems.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
Successful candidates will have:
  • Demonstrated experience programming in multiple languages, such as Python and JavaScript.
  • Ability to research and formulate hardware and software designs and act according to the decisions.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid cloud environment with AWS resources, or on-premises VMs.
  • JavaScript: Experience building web applications using web development framework such as Django, or other MVT frameworks.
  • RESTful API building experience.
  • Python: Experience building web services and web applications and testing frameworks in Python.
  • Demonstrated experience in database programming (i.e. functions, integration with external languages, stored procedures, triggers, batch jobs, etc.).
  • Proficient in designing efficient and robust ETL workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a Linux environments.
  • Ability to develop prototypes and proof of concepts for selected solutions.
  • Familiar with data product integration into websites and other online tools.
  • Adaptable to new technologies, languages, and environments.
  • Expert level in data indexing, performance tuning, and optimization.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: IT Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $93,100 - $167,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
