Finish Carpenter Jobs

Under general supervision, performs difficult carpentry work which involves the construction, erection, installation, alteration, and repair of structures and fixtures of wood. Engages in hand and bench finish carpentry shop work.

• Erects framework for structure.
• Determines materials necessary.
• Erects scaffolding and ladders.
• Performs a variety of work tasks related to construction and alteration of structural elements.
• Studies and works from drawings, blueprints, rough sketches, and oral instructions.
• Shapes materials to prescribed measurements by use of saws, chisels, and planes.
• Assembles materials and fastens them together.
• Lays sub-flooring, hardwood floors, vinyl, and asphalt tile floors.
• Cuts openings for windows and doors.
• Builds and repairs furniture and other wooden equipment in a carpentry shop.
• Prepares layout by use of rule framing square and calipers.
• Prepares guidelines on materials.
• Fits and hangs doors.
• Re-faces cabinet work.
• Applies shock absorbing and sound proofing material to ceilings and walls.
• Verifies trueness of structures.
• Installs window frames and sash.
• Builds and repairs stairways and railings.
• Installs or removes partitions.
• Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, door locks, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finishing hardware.
• Builds, repairs, removes and installs counters, cabinets, shelving, and benches.

• The various kinds of wood, their adaptability and uses.
• The principles and methods of carpentry construction.

• Constructing, altering and repairing of doors, windows, and other applicable items.
• Handling the tools of the trade.
• Observation.
• Physical and mechanical dexterity.

• Read and interpret work from drawing, blueprints, rough sketches, and oral instructions.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Erect metal stud framing and hang drywall.
• Demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness in handling unusual carpentry construction work.
• Interact effectively with others with tact and diplomacy.

High school graduation or equivalent G.E.D.
Two (2) years of experience in the construction, erection, installation, alteration, and repair of wooden structures and Equipment
Employees in this class will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle, and will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned.
Valid State of Michigan Operator License
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position
