UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Carpenter.

Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, perform construction, repair and remodeling to include, but not limited to, buildings, scaffolds, framing, installing sheetrock, concrete formwork, installing metal and wooden door and jambs, windows and hardwood floors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work may take place in tenant occupied space.

  • Construct projects and modifications from blueprints or sketches.

  • Develop cost estimates for installations and repairs.

  • Install, adjust, repair and replace various building components such as casework, shelving, door and window hardware or ceiling tiles.

  • Operate hand and power equipment such as saws, jointers, lathes, sanders, planers, boring and mortising machines and other tools typical for the trade.

  • Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers.

  • Load and unload materials and supplies.

  • Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.

  • Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status and work progress, required project materials and equipment.

  • Work with lead to discuss any proposed project changes before construction.

  • May instruct semi-skilled workers.

  • Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops and other business partners such as EH&S, Engineering Services, Design Services, Capital Planning & Development and UW Information Technology to facilitate work.

  • Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

  • Comply with all UW and Facilities Services policies and procedures, FMC protocols, i.e., Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).

  • Support all management directives and the vision and values of FMC.

  • Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.

  • Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

  • Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.

  • Requirements include:

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter;

  • or full journey status as a carpenter in a union;
    or four years' applicable work experience.

    Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.


  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Desired:

    • PLUS:
    • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products
    • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
    o Proficiency in concrete formwork, such as footings, foundations, walls, slabs, retaining structures and stairs.
    o Proficiency in all types of door hardware, such as electrical, pneumatic and manual, locks, strikes, closers, operators, coordinators, exit devices and panic hardware.
    o Proficiency in fabrication and installation of casework, furniture and other fixtures.
    o Proficiency in finish carpentry, such as casework installations, milling and installations of all types of trim and shelving.
    o Proficiency in metal framing, such as walls, ceilings and soffits, including openings with hollow metal frames.
    o Proficiency with stationary power tools, such as panel and table saws, jointers, sanders, planers, shapers, edgebanders, boring and mortising machines.
    o Proficiency in wood framing, such as walls, floors, ceilings, stairs and roofs.

    Conditions of Employment:

    • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
    • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
    • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
    • Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
    • May be required to accept variable work shift.
    • Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
    • Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
    • Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
    • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
    • Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
    • Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.
