Position Summary
The Financial/Budget Analyst is part of the accounting team. Primary duties include effective budget planning and spending for the organization; organizational and program budget liaison, monitoring, analysis and reporting in support of the staff and programs; preparation of proposal budgets (government, foundation and commercial (training/consulting)); and performs variety of budget, cost, forecast, reporting and finance tasks as required.
Responsibilities
Effective Budget Planning and Spending for the Organization
- Presents budget findings to management
- Develops and provides JAMIS reports for managers
- Consolidates the organizational budget for review
- Becomes accounting system (JAMIS) Planning Module expert and lead
- Develops organizational budget with managers
- Reviews submissions for completeness, accuracy and compliance with company standards and other regulations
- Monitors spending to ensure its set budget and reports throughout the year
Organizational and Program Budget Liaison, Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting in Support of the Staff and Programs
- Leads budget reviews and provides necessary reports and analysis
- Analyzes and monitors revenue and expenditures and identifies potentially deficient budget categories
- Makes recommendations and proposals for technical solutions
- Primary financial liaison for team that day-to-day financially supports and advises PMs and department leads
- Utilizes accounting system budgeting and reporting capabilities and trains PMs and other staff
Preparation of Proposal Budgets
- Makes financial recommendations regarding opportunities
- Coordinates with other departments and maintains proposal tools
- Teams to provide (new or carryover) proposals for government, foundation and commercial proposals
Budget, Cost, Forecast, Reporting and Finance tasks as required.
- Develops and prepares monthly financial reports on necessary topics and effectively communicates (written and oral) results and recommendations
- Acts as quality control and performs necessary internal audit steps to insure proper setup
- Prepares reports and estimates future needs and forecasts
- Other duties as assigned
- Analyzes and identifies issues and resolutions
- Develops predictive financial models to support decision-making
- Analyzes historical and current financial data to understand the company’s financial status
Required Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is required, a graduate or advanced certification is a plus
Experience:
- Advanced experience using Microsoft Excel and planning tools is required
- A minimum of four to seven years of Financial/Budget Analyst experience is required
- Experience using project accounting software is preferred; use of our current system JAMIS is a plus
- Experience with government and foundation contracts/grants
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Be able to do quick mental math and solve complex equations during analysis
- Superior professionalism, judgment and integrity
- Strong communication and public speaking skills in presenting financial information to others and convincing them to implement budgeting suggestions
- Proven proficiency in a variety of financial, budgeting and spreadsheet software applications is essential
- Proven analytical and financial modeling skills
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to translate financial concepts to non-financial staff and the ability to work in a team environment
- Outstanding attention to detail and proofing ability
- Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles
- Utilize critical thinking to determine possible outcomes for various financial forecasting and budgeting choices
- Ability to recognize trends in data and properly interpret statistics
