Job Description

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of The North Fork Animal Welfare League, Inc, (NFAWL) a non-profit organization operating two municipal shelters, Town of Southold and Town of Riverhead in Suffolk County New York. The NFAWL also provides comprehensive outreach services to the same communities. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing day to day operations of the organization within the policy and authority established by the Board of Directors relative to public relations, fund raising, government and community relationships, personnel management and fiscal responsibility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

·Advocate strongly for the safe and humane treatment of animals.

·Oversee all aspects of animal care that ensure humane treatment of animals in accordance with state and local laws.

·Oversee the quality of programs and services to ensure they are carried out ethically and within guidelines set by accrediting agencies and funding agencies.

·Work effectively with all stakeholders to accomplish mission critical and strategic plan initiatives.

· Fiscally responsible for profit and loss. Operate within budget guidelines by efficient resource management relative to staffing, operating requirements, programs and services and capital expenditures for necessary facility, organizational, and grounds maintenance and improvements. Oversee all expenditures and income.

· Direct and oversee, in cooperation with the Treasurer of the board and accountant, annual operating budget preparation and approval to Board of Directors.

·Oversee preparation and approval of audited financial statements and 990’s.

·Proactively negotiate and manage all operational and funding contracts.

· Clearly communicate the vision, mission, programs and services of the North Fork Animal Welfare League to all stakeholders.

· Professionally represent the North Fork Animal Welfare League at all meetings and conferences.

·Review and approve all public communications including news and fundraising releases, grant applications, organization publications and documents.

·Direct, approve and oversee annual fundraising.

·Seek and cultivate community, donor and volunteer relationships.

·Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteer.

·Ensure that job descriptions are developed and updated and that sound human resource practices are in place.

·Establish and oversee an effective management team.

·Maintain a high performance culture of service and a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates staff of top quality people and administer established personnel policies.

· Provide all required management reports to Board of Directors and municipal and state authorities. Jointly, with designated Board officers, execute legal documents.

·Continually observe conditions within the organization and recommend changes/improvements to the Board of Directors to ensure efficient use of resources and sustainability of operations.

·Operate (and manage staff in operating) modern office equipment including computer equipment, and software programs: database/spreadsheet, word processing, online data entry programs, website content management, and social media applications.

·Actively engage and energize staff, volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations and funders.

·Utilize continuing education opportunities and maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field and develop programs accordingly.

·Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with funder and political and community leaders.
