Job Description
THE POSITION
The Ventura Police Department is looking for an Evidence Technician (Forensic Specialist) to join the team!
The Evidence Technician (Forensic Specialist) is a member of the Ventura Police Department Crime Scene Unit. This unit is comprised of two Evidence Technicians that play an integral part with subsequent investigation processes, providing potential leads to the case investigator using scientific applications. The all-civilian unit performs the full range of complex and technical crime scene investigations, evidence collection, documentation and preservation, forensic photography, latent print examinations, providing expert testimony and other related work as required.
This position requires work on weekends, evenings, and holidays due to the requirement of responding to major incidents as needed during non-scheduled work hours.
What You'll Do
This Evidence Technician (Forensic Specialist) operates on a 4/10 work schedule, Monday through Friday, and will be subject to call out on weekends, evenings, holidays on a rotating, on-call schedule. Incumbents will be working the laboratory, general office settings, and in the field dealing with all types of weather conditions. The Evidence Technician duties include climbing, bending, lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects weighing up to 50lbs., exposure to blood-borne, air-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, various hazardous chemicals used to develop latent print impressions, occasionally crawling in small, confined spaces, possible prolonged use of computers, and tolerating adverse conditions such as fingerprinting and photographing deceased persons.
Evidence Technician duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Coordinates examination of specific evidence items by appropriate expert; coordinates physical evidence follow-up from the District Attorney's Office; prepares court exhibits and photographic displays; drafts crime scene diagrams for use in court proceedings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Operates a variety of photography, video, and identification equipment in the field and in the lab; trains Police Department personnel in the use of identification equipment, photography, and the collection and processing of physical evidence.
  • Testifies in court to the nature, meaning and methods of collection of physical evidence.
  • Examines physical evidence in a police laboratory using accepted techniques and methods; compares, classifies, and indexes fingerprints and forwards fingerprints to proper agencies for identification; organizes police laboratory equipment and maintains an inventory of supplies; orders supplies as needed.
  • Identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence from crime scenes, including blood samples, sexual assault kits, clothing, and weapons; ensures all evidence is documented appropriately; takes photographs and video of crime scenes, including homicide and traffic accidents; lifts fingerprints using a variety of methods; makes castings of tire, tool and shoe impressions; prepares reports on crime scenes including observations, actions taken and conclusions.
Who You Are
The ideal candidate for this position is organized, detail-oriented and able to work as a team player and possess:
  • Knowledge or experience in entering and comparing latent print impressions in the local and federal Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS).
  • Experience or knowledge in the operation of digital imaging systems used for documentation and analysis purposes.
  • Experience or knowledge in recognition, search techniques, collection, and documentation of latent prints from physical evidence.
  • Ability to train staff members, especially pertaining to the related fields of Crime Scene investigations and Latent print examinations.
  • The ability to conduct, document, and manage complex crime scene investigations, including detailed report writing skills.
  • Ability to respond diplomatically and tactfully to people of diverse backgrounds in adverse situations.

As a condition of employment, selected candidate is required to undergo and successfully complete an extensive Police Department background investigation, including Live Scan fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the candidate from City employment.)

  • SALARY: $29.36 - $35.69 Hourly DOQ ($61,068.18 - $74,229.17 Annually DOQ)

Position Qualifications
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO QUALIFY
A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school with two years of experience or technical training in related areas including fingerprint classification, crime scene photography, and identification duties are required.
License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver license.
Certificate: An International Association for Identification (IAI) certification as a crime scene investigator (CCSI) and/or a Certified Latent Print Examiner (CLPE) are desired.
