Title: Epidemiologist - OEMH Rural Health
$60,0000 - $75,000 / Posted thru: 4-24-23
Limited term for one year

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live In Michigan

Purpose: This position provides epidemiological expertise to the Office of Equity and Minority Health (OEMH) and the Michigan Center for Rural Health on matters concerning minority health, health disparity and health equity. This position will be responsible for assessing and analyzing rural health outcomes and disparity data by factors including but not limited to socioeconomic status, geography, race, and ethnicity. This position will work to identify, compile, and evaluate access to data sources to be used for surveillance and epidemiological analysis related to health disparities and health equity. The Rural Health Epidemiologist will provide technical assistance to OEMH, Michigan Center for Rural Health, MDHHS Policy and Planning and rural Local Health Department staff realted to the MDHHS Rural Health Equity Plan, epidemiology, data collection, dissemination, and management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance to Michigan Center for Rural Health, rural Local Health Department, MDHHS staff and the Regional Health Equity Councils related to epidemiology, data collection, and management.
  • Disseminate results of health disparities surveillance and special studies to MDHHS and other local, state, and national audiences, through oral and written presentations, factsheets, briefs, and other deliverables as appropriate.
  • Identify, compile, and evaluate access to data sources to be used for surveillance and epidemiological analysis related to health disparities and health equity.
  • Work with OEMH, Michigan Center for Rural Health, and rural Local Health Department staff to administer and manage existing health equity related surveillance systems.
  • Provide Evaluation, and technical assistance for capacity building data projects.
  • Collaborate with other epidemiologists to create data collection instruments/questions measuring health equity that will be used in exposure assessments and health studies for sites under investigation and provide analytic support for data collected.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional, and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MDHHS and MPHI projects and always represents the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Meet regularly with other members of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health, and the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Prevention for planning, exchange of technical methods, and participation in common epidemiologic tasks for the Bureaus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Master’s Degree in epidemiology or public health-related field such as biostatistics with course preparation in epidemiology, biostatistics, and chronic disease.

Experience: Preference given to candidates with two or more years of professional experience conducting a variety of surveys, investigations, tests, and analyses of human disease and health conditions, but is not required. Experience with a statistical software package, such as SAS and SPSS, is preferred but not required.

Important Skills and Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of principles of health equity and its application to epidemiology, control and prevention issues would be very advantageous.
  • Ability to present data and research results as information useful to decision-makers.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: OEMH staff currently work remotely on a permanent basis. Hybrid options are available. Some in-person meetings. Routine physical activities: standing, sitting for extended periods of time at a computer, walking, reaching, and bending. Occasional physical activities: stooping, lifting, and carrying. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. In-state travel for training and/or meetings and out-of-state travel for responsibilities related to funding and duties.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.
