The Engineer (Term) is a part of the Civil and Environmental Engineering work unit within Vanderbilt University School of Engineering. The position provides engineering support; implements and documents defined research products; is involved in single or multi-project, multi-task programming and/or engineering in support of department's projects with direction from faculty and research staff.
NOTE: A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Other tasks as assigned
- Supports community outreach efforts to Vanderbilt student organizations, Nashville area schools, clubs, and Maker organizations to promote science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM)
- Assists with project management for multiple projects in the lab and development of project progress reports
- Maintain familiarity and expertise with test equipment operation, testing and sensors to support projects and research goals for the lab
- Assists with oversight of projects to ensure adherence to testing standards, safety protocols, and best practices
- Assist with all aspects of laboratory operations in collaboration with PI’s, Faculty, and Staff
- Assist with sponsor/research team/faculty communications effectively and professionally
- Performs limited facility management tasks in collaboration with VU Facilities and outside vendors under the direction of the Lab Director or PI’s
- Assists in strategy development for testbed design, fabrication methods and implementation with project teams to support proposal development and further project and research goals in the lab
- Maintains a working knowledge of safety and export compliance policies
- Provide testbed and test equipment training to faculty, staff and students working on projects in the lab to ensure the safe operation of testbeds and test equipment and the safety of all team members
Qualifications
Necessary:
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a small development team
- Skilled in the ability to understand and utilize maintenance and service documentation for troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and/or instrumentation systems
- Bachelor’s degree is required
- Experience working in academic research environment
- Good written communication skills: specifically, the ability to document research results and write project progress reports
- Experience with safety programs and protocols for research laboratories
- A working knowledge of the use of general powered and non-powered hand tools, machine tools, and digital manufacturing tools
Preferred:
- Experience in instrumentation, sensor selection and installation
- Experience with data collection and analysis
- Prior experience with additive manufacturing (3D Printing) equipment
- Prior experience using CAD (computer aided design) tools
