Position will serve as an Electronics Technician I in the Carthage Traffic Services Unit and be responsible for the maintenance and repair of Electrical, Electronic, and Computerized Traffic Control systems within Division 8. Position will also assist in the installation, testing, and inspection of new Traffic Control Systems and existing systems which are upgraded. The duties to be performed include: installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, replacing worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills of this position include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Subject to overtime work when necessary and position is subject to emergency callback. The Electronics Technician is expected to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and keep an accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer.
- Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams
- Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code
- Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision
Additional Expectations:
Possess the ability to lift up to 85 lbs. or more shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Applicant must possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices. Considerable knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specification. Ability to trouble shoot nonstandard traffic electronic equipment, or equipment with incomplete or missing documentation. Must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights and times of emergency. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class B CDL with no endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
