Job Description
Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for maintenance of electrical power distribution systems, emergency backup electrical generators/automatic transfer switches, which serve airport terminal building facilities, and airport customers. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours
7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday- Friday; plus rotating shiftwork, evenings and holidays based on business need

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs installation of electrical raceways and related circuits.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical motors and generators used in various pumping operations, may require frequent lifting/carrying of up to 30 pounds.
  • Maintain knowledge of current electrical codes, and ensures that all electrical systems meet standards.
  • Maintains an inventory of parts and equipment.
  • Installs electrical outlets, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, electrical panels, computer plugs, lighting systems, and other electrical components and equipment.
  • Assists in re-lamping overhead ramp lights.
  • Performs re-lamping of picnic areas, recreational areas, parking lots, and airport runways and taxiways.
  • Installs electrical hook-ups for special events.
  • Repairs and maintains clocks, motors, and similar appliances in municipal buildings.
  • Installs new electrical circuits when needed.
  • Installs security and landscape lighting.
  • Diagnoses electrical problems, utilizing available diagnostic tools.
  • Maintains emergency lighting systems.
  • Installs, maintains, alters, and repairs electrical fixtures and equipment such as wiring, lighting power appliances, machinery, overhead circuits, underground conduits, and pole lines.
  • Performs electrical inspections of buildings and equipment.
  • Repairs airfield electrical systems and electric gate operator systems.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
  • Must maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport at all times.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment and a Criminal History Records check upon employment.
  • Four (4) years of experience in dedicated electrical maintenance or construction.
  • Must successfully pass all background investigations.
  • Licensed as a Journeyman Electrician by the State of Texas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Airport electrical experience is a plus.
  • Class B CDL.
  • Commercial or industrial electrical experience.
  • Two (2) years as a licensed Journeyman electrician.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of electrical installation, repair, and maintenance techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electrical and air conditioning trades.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including working with high voltage.
  • Knowledge of City and national electrical codes.
  • Skill in operating standard tools, equipment, and testing devices of the trade.
  • Ability to perform all the physical with or without accommodations, intellectual, and analytical requirements of the position including decision making.
  • Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, and high noise areas.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively,.
  • Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems, devices, machines, and equipment.
