The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a Power System Studies Engineer with 2 years’ experience to join our Power System Studies team. The ideal candidate has an understanding of Transmission System design concepts & analyses such as Transmission Interconnection Studies, Reactive Power Compensation, Short Circuit (Fault) Analysis, Circuit Breaker Rating Analysis and system modeling software for the same.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards:

• Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures
• Applies to assigned tasks as appropriate

Quality/Continuous Improvement:

• Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts
• Continues developing knowledge and complies with Black and Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks

Engineering Production:

• Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements
• Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work
• Performs research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection
• Prepares and verifies less complex engineering deliverables
• Prepares engineering calculations following standard methods and principles

Project Coordination:

• Coordinates with others as assigned by supervisor or project leadership
• Seeks out supervisor or project leadership to share information and gain guidance with respect to details of design and interdisciplinary coordination

Client Focus:

• Focuses on the needs of internal clients (project team leadership) while attempting to gain basic understanding of external client's main interests and drivers
• May provide support to business development or pursuit activities

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology:

• Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes

Preferred Qualifications

• BS in Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline
• Ability to lead projects including management of project schedules, budgets, and staffing.
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
• Familiarity with Software Products:
• 2 years of experience in performing Transmission and System Analysis Studies
• Familiarity with NERC standards such as TPL, MOD, and PRC
• Ability to perform studies such as Transmission Interconnection Studies, Reactive Power Compensation, Short Circuit (Fault) Analysis, Circuit Breaker Rating Analysis
• Analytics and Scripting - Python
• Short Circuit & Relay Coordination - Aspen Oneliner and PSS CAPE
• Load Flow and Stability Analysis - PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, TARA
• Familiarity with ISOs such us PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE, NYISO
• Ability to independently develop written communication and to facilitate coordination with team members and clients.
• Line Impedance - Aspen Line Constants and Aspen Line Database

Minimum Qualifications

• All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
• Minimum of 1 year related work experience
• Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing
