The Opportunity

Recurrent Ventures is seeking an Editor, Commerce to join the Bob Vila team.

BobVila.com is the online home of the #1 icon in home improvement, Bob Vila. From inspiration to how-to, this publication provides all one needs to know for the entire home improvement journey. The team strives to educate and offer ideas for all levels of homeowner knowledge and DIY skill set - and be the authority that their audience relies on time and time again. Stories span home, garden, and DIY niches, ranging from expert advice for starting a container garden to coverage of the latest real estate trends.

The role will focus on product reviews and ensure that buyer's guides are best optimized for SEO and affiliate. The mission is to improve the accuracy and freshness of our product guides while optimizing to increase traffic, conversion and revenue. Each assignment will involve 1) understanding the Bob Vila brand, 2) assessing what might turn a story into a more complete resource for readers and 3) implementing updates through line editing, fact-checking, additional product research, sharp copywriting, and SEO.

The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of commerce strategy, SEO best practices and tools, and online journalism in order to edit each buyer’s guide into a well-researched, easy-to-digest story. The stories themselves range between 700 and 3,000 words, depending on the format.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with other departments, such as proofing and production, to ensure that content is produced on time and meets the publication's goals and objectives.
• Analyze individual articles to identify where to edit and enhance based on competitive research and article performance metrics.
• Ensure that all content is optimized for SEO.
• Become deeply familiar with Bob Vila’s extensive library of buyer’s guides.
• Develop and manage relationships with writers, contributors, and other external partners to ensure a steady flow of high-quality content.
• Line edit and fact-check articles to ensure accuracy, clarity, and style consistency. Additional product research and sharp copyrighting as needed.
• Utilize the site style guide and most current templates to inform update suggestions and continue to standardize guides across the site.
• Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices, and make recommendations for improvements to the publication's editorial processes.

Qualifications

• Experience working in Wordpress or other content management systems
• Working knowledge of SEO best practices and tools.
• Passion for the home, garden, and DIY niche. Experience working with lifestyle and shelter publications is preferred.
• A Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Creative Writing, Communications, Marketing, or other related field is preferred.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Sharp research, writing, and editing skills.
• Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• 3 - 5 years of experience in writing, publishing, digital media, journalism, or other related field. At least two (2) of those years should be focused in commerce-related editorial.
• An eye for what separates a reliable product from the competition.
