The Operational Excellence team is the First Line of Defense team with a mission to enable business growth and objectives while maintaining a strong control environment. This team acts as a Center of Excellence (CoE) within the business, and assists in the identification, measurement, monitoring, and management of Operational Risks related to the business products, processes, and initiatives. Operational risk is the risk to the current or projected business objectives and resilience arising from inadequate or failed internal processes or systems, human errors or misconduct, or adverse external events.
This team’s scope includes all aspects of GABM (Global Advertising and Brand Management), including Brand Management, media buying, sponsorships and experiences, marketing strategy, Onbrand and Amex Insights.
For these areas of the business, the team leads governance and implementation of requirements related to several large-scale programs like New Initiatives/Processes, PRSA Controls and Testing, Third Party Risk, IAG/Regulatory Exams, Information Security, Privacy, Financial Reporting, Physical Security and Business Continuity/Resiliency.
In line with Amex’s “three lines of defense” approach to risk management, the FLoD Operational Excellence team actively works with Second Line of Defense (GRBC, Compliance, Privacy) and Third Line of Defense (Internal Audit) teams to ensure adequate implementation of risk management framework requirements.
Job Requirements:
The Director GABM Operational Excellence role will lead first line of defense operational risk activities for GABM.
Key activities of the role will include:
- Partner with Compliance and GCO to ensure GABM initiatives and processes align with applicable laws, regulations and policies, with effective controls and rigorous testing to prove compliance.
- Drive a culture of Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement and ensure the GABM organization is meeting expectations of the Control Rating.
- Effectively communicate takeaways to business partners in order to drive vital responses and action.
- Build, lead, and develop a diverse team of impactful operational risk professionals; with experience in a wide spectrum of operational risk matters like controls framework, information security, compliance, third party etc.
- Represent GABM in relevant governance forums, management committees and internal/external reviews.
- Management of large-scale Operational Risk programs: New Initiatives Approval/Assessment (FIG), Third Party Lifecycle Management, Corrective Action/Loss Event Resolution and Process Risk Self-Assessment (PRSA)
- Identify trends, themes, tendencies that indicate emerging operational risks by analyzing data and trends
- Drive pragmatic business decisions on complex customer/shareholder issues
- Be a trusted advisor for the GABM Leaders and Teams; helping enable successful launch of business initiatives, yet with strong preventative and detective controls
- Independently assess operational risks – challenging both our historical practices and working with business partners to improve processes
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of Amex/GABM/Consumer business processes, regulations and industry standards including infrastructure requirements and related controls
- Highly motivated self-starter, with a sense of urgency, positive attitude and an agile approach - ability to shift priorities with changing internal and external environment
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in business, Engineering or Science subject areas.
- Strong focus on the customer with the ability to view issues from a customer's point of view
- Strong people leader and great teammate with a consistent track record of developing team members and creating highly effective and results-driven culture
- Proficient in breaking down complex matters into core issues and root causes that can be more readily addressed.
- Strong relationship management and proven ability of positively collaborating and partnering with multiple stakeholders
- Prior leadership experience in Operational Excellence, Business Operations, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Compliance or related fields, with demonstrated experience in working with management at various levels
- Ability to prioritize high-impact issues, and successfully influence without authority across functions and geographies.
- Expertise in working with complex and constantly evolving technology enabled business processes – with a comprehensive understanding of associated risks, threats and risks of reliance on third parties.
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
