The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The University's Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) works to prevent and respond to discrimination and harassment by developing and implementing policies and procedures that address discrimination, harassment, retaliation, gender‐based misconduct; permitted and prohibited relationships; and the duty to report and the duty to act, all in accordance with relevant federal, state, and local laws.
The Director of Training and Education reports to the Vice Provost for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action.
Responsibilities
Manage and direct policy compliance and prevention training for staff, faculty and other relevant audiences on University nondiscrimination, equal opportunity and affirmative action policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state and local laws. This includes:
Engaging in proactive outreach to ensure that EOAA is conducting training for all appropriate University populations.
Working strategically and collaboratively with University constituents, to develop trainings that meet the needs of those constituents.
Working strategically and collaboratively with key University constituents to develop and administer joint trainings, where appropriate.
Creating new and update existing training materials to ensure that they are fresh, engaging, and up to date with applicable policy and law.
Conducting mediations and facilitated conversations.
Producing EOAA’s Annual Report.
Maintaining and updating EOAA’s Policies and Procedures, ensuring that they are consistent with current federal, state, and local laws.
The types of trainings to be managed and directed by this position include, but are not limited to:
General overviews of EOAA’s policies and procedures on discrimination, discriminatory harassment and gender based misconduct.
Best practices for search committees.
New hire orientations.
Individual trainings to address University policy violations
Manage, direct, and ensure compliance with other University training programs. This includes:
Managing the University’s New York Anti-Sexual Harassment Training.
Managing the University’s Faculty Briefing.
Managing the University’s Teaching Assistant Guide.
Directing the EOAA Training and Education Associate to maintains records related to all EOAA and University-administered trainings and education related to discrimination, discriminatory harassment and gender-based misconduct.
Providing compliance support through education, resources, oversight and assistance to the Columbia community.
Identifying and developing initiatives to address specific areas of EOAA compliance including policies and procedures on discrimination, harassment and gender-based misconduct and faculty recruitment.
Creating enhanced awareness of regulatory requirements and ensuring adequate training resources are available to comply with the requirements.
Directing the EOAA Training and Education Associate in the maintenance of the EOAA website, EOAA materials, newsletters, or other materials to complement training and compliance efforts and to keep the campus community informed of EOAA policies and procedures.
Supervising the EOAA Training and Education Associate
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
JD required. Minimum of seven to nine years of relevant experience.
Ability to work with confidential information in a discreet and professional manner. Must be self-directed with effective interpersonal and problem solving skills. Must have strong analytical and project management skills. Ability to prioritize and respond to requests in a timely and knowledgeable manner. Requires the flexibility and adaptability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are critical. Proven experience in working collaboratively and effectively with varied constituencies across a large organization. Demonstrated skill in tracking and maintaining data and developing reports, including a strong working knowledge of tools for managing and presenting data. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook) and Google’s G Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Gmail).
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to conduct legal research and writing; familiarity with civil rights laws, regulations and procedures, and/or employment and labor law; experience providing trainings and/or presentations to faculty and staff.
