The Opportunity

The Director of Teaching and Learning reports to the Chief Academic Officer. The Director of Teaching and Learning will assist in the design and implementation of the KIPP SoCal instructional approach. The instructional approach will focus on building the content and child development knowledge of teachers and leaders. In addition to building knowledge, the Director of Teaching and Learning will codify best practices in methods, drive the selection of rigorous, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant curriculum, and provide direction for how learning best occurs in schools and classrooms. Additionally, the Director of Teaching and Learning will support the development of instructional coaching skills for all leaders. All efforts driven by the Director of Teaching and Learning will be in service of an equitable, inclusive, rigorous, and diverse learning experience for all students.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assessments and Accountability: Create and implement instructional approach across all content areas with aligned scope and sequences and assessmentsCollaborate with Data Team to analyze all assessments and correlate student achievement to best in class teaching and learning practicesCollect and revise exemplar unit/module plans in core content areas for teachers and leaders
  • Content, Curriculum and Instructional Methods: Create content blueprints for KIPP SoCal across all content areasAnalyze and recommend research-based curriculum to support standards based approach to teaching and learningResearch, create and implement best practice collaboration and sharing in instructional methods that enhance teaching and learningCollaborate with the Director of Schools Team to ensure fidelity of implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, accountability, and instructional coaching
  • Professional Development: Create and implement professional development strands for teachers and teams on content, methods and curriculum related to all content areas. Create and implement professional development strands for leaders and teams on the instructional coaching teachers. Create and implement approach to catalog excellent teaching, planning, and practices through the collection of videos and artifacts

Qualifications

  • Examines the impact of his/her identities, biases, assumptions, and behaviors on his/her power and privilege, interactions with others, work and leadership in the organization; able to recognize, immediately respond, and consistently remedy interpersonal and systemic bias and inequities
  • Model the values of KIPP SoCal (lead with love, strength in the collective, equity and excellence, curiosity and integrity)
  • Ability to analyze and use qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis to drive decision making; strong judgment
  • Demonstrated excellence in school leadership positions like principal/director of schools, including instructional coaching, leading professional development, and developing other school principals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading through change, executing on major initiatives, and leading cross-departmental work
  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Possesses a deep commitment to both racial and educational equity; supports the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP serves; holds self and others on team accountable for centering equity
  • Demonstrated achievement in partnership development, including an ability to mobilize people and create champions to support an organizational mission
  • 5-7 years of education related experience, preferably charter schools
  • Excellent relationship builder with demonstrated experience managing diverse stakeholders, leading change, and mobilizing others and creating champions to support an organizational mission

  • KIPP SoCal Public Schools offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position. The salary range for this position is $111,300 to $166,900. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint of $139,100 depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budget allocated for this role.
