JOB MISSION:
The New Balance Sports Research Team is a multidisciplinary group of innovators focused on pushing the boundaries of human performance through scientific exploration. We deliver authentic, performance focused insights to New Balance teams focused on creating best in class products and experiences. We utilize our brand new, state of the art 17,000 sq. foot research space, located within a functioning track and field center, consisting of running tracks, turf surfaces, court surfaces, motion capture, force plates and treadmills, environmental chamber, and much more.
In the New Balance Sports Research Lab it is our mission to be an innovation catalyst pushing the boundaries of performance through scientific exploration. In the role of Director of Sports Research you will be responsible for creating the vision for the team, shaping the research roadmap, and partnering with innovation and global leaders to align the research roadmap with the product roadmap. You will use your leadership skills and advanced knowledge of sports science to create and execute research programs. You will lead the team, as they work with a multidisciplinary team of designers, developers, engineers and product managers, and ensure insights, data, and best practices are understood, appropriately applied and leveraged for innovation. You will plan and budget for team and infrastructure growth where necessary to support Sports Research workstreams. You will support your team by coaching and facilitating career growth opportunities.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Identify and incubate external Sports Research partnerships that align with our goals and vision for the team.
  • Lead research share outs with senior leadership to ensure there is clear line of site of the roadmap.
  • Create a collaborative environment in which multidisciplinary teams can learn, experiment, and innovate.
  • In collaboration with Innovation leadership, create the 3-5 year strategic roadmap for Sports Research.
  • Ensure insights are translated into actionable language and direction for product teams.
  • Develop the infrastructure (processes, software programs, protocols and procedures) for a state-of-the-art sports research lab and team.
  • Manage Sports Research facilities, including the capital improvements necessary, to remain cutting edge and impactful.
  • Create a learning and development environment for team members to ensure team members continue to learn and grow.
  • Foster an environment in which best practices are continuously updated and continuously optimized.
  • Ensure SRL Roadmap and goals are properly prioritized, maintained, and achieved.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Significant experience in a fast pace R&D environment.
  • Ability to create and execute detailed road maps and meet associated timelines.
  • Proven record of taking insights from scientific exploration and applying them to consumer products.
  • Ability to work with other senior leaders across organizations to provide guidance, solutions, direction, and growth opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement strategies for complex organizations.
  • Deep knowledge of the equipment used in movement science and associated analytical methods.
  • Ph.D. or Masters Degree with a background in biomechanics, kinesiology, and/or exercise science or an equivalent field with 7+ years of relevant work experience or equivalent education, experience and training (e.g. Masters and 9+ years) and 5+ years' experience of managing teams.
  • A history of creating new methodologies, protocols, knowledge, and insights.

Flexible Work Schedule

New Balance Associates currently work in office three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
