Brief Description


Job Objective:


Plans, directs and coordinates activities relating to the protection, safeguarding and security of hospital assets, employees, visitors, patients, and others; determines that established goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed priorities, time limitations and with fiscal responsibility; advises, makes recommendations, assists in the formulation of goals and objectives; designs, implements and monitors safety and security policies, procedures and programs; complies with federal, state and local legal regulations; and exercises independent judgment in the course of carrying out overall responsibilities and other activities as assigned.


Under the general direction of the AV Hospital Administration, Security Director is responsible for serving as the Hospital Safety Officer.



Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepares work schedules; assigns or delegates responsibilities; provides work functions; resolves problems; sets deadlines to maintain completion of operational security functions.
  • Maintains a high degree of credibility, integrity, confidentiality, and trust.
  • Skill in analyzing and independently solving a variety of difficult situations and problems.
  • Ability to delegate responsibility and achieve results through subordinates and/or contract personnel.
  • Understands the complexities of a large organization.
  • Develops implements and manages security training.
  • Skill in supervising others and maintaining effective holistic relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
  • Develops preventative security programs, including the supervision of security personnel.
  • Demonstrates sound business judgment.
  • Certified Hospital Safety & Security Professional from the International Association of Healthcare Safety & Security preferred
  • Performs audits of security related performance and conducts physical surveys of premises security, including security equipment condition.
  • Exhibits good presentation skills with large and small audiences.
  • Conducts, supervises and prepares reports relating to internal investigations of any losses or violations of AVH regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of safety and security management, including business management practices, personnel practices, administrative practices, security preventative practices, investigatory practices, and related legal responsibilities.

  • Plans, examines, analyzes, evaluates, and supervises Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH) safety & security operations, inclusive of physical security assets and security personnel.

  • Under general direction of the AV Hospital Administration and working collaboratively with other organizational leaders, the Security Director leads the organization in preparing for Disasters/Emergencies.
  • PC computer knowledge
  • Prepares periodic budget estimate and reports; orders supplies and equipment as needed; reviews financial reports to ensure security operation efficiency and quality control.
  • Maintains an open management style.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, including assigning, evaluating and modifying work.
  • Reports outcomes, decisions, and recommendations to AV Hospital Administration.
  • Ability to identify and resolve administrative problems.
  • Knowledge of functions and processes of carrying out programs.
  • Prepares periodic budget estimate and reports; orders supplies and equipment as needed; reviews financial reports to ensure security operation efficiency and quality control.

  • Knowledge of the Joint Commission standards and elements of performance related to hospital safety and security.

  • Interprets and disseminates AVH policies to subordinate personnel; and evaluates employee performance.
  • Identifies systems and operational problems and proposes solutions.
  • Maintains writing skills required for writing, editing, and revising department policies and procedures, issuing memorandums, and compiling reports.

  • Directs and coordinates, through subordinate and/or contract personnel, AVH activities and security functions, utilizing knowledge of established policies, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of content and formatting of reports.
  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree with major course work in Business Administration, criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Healthcare Security or closely related field perferred; and/or FEMA course certifications: IS.100, 15.200, IS.700, IS,800, ICS.300, ICS.400, preferred
  • Skill in effectively using time and resources to accomplish security program operations.
  • Knowledge of State and federal regulations and standards related to safe work environments.
  • Serves as AVH’s liaison with public law enforcement, fire and other agencies as it relates to security.
  • Exhibits analytical skills and an understanding of operational processes.

  • Performs other appropriate functions, as may be assigned from time-to-time, by the Senior Director of Plant Operations & Safety.
  • Five to ten years full-time experience performing supervisory responsibilities or highly responsible work related to the duties and responsibilities of this position
  • Hazard and Risk Assessment and Management
  • Five (5) years' experience in an acute care hospital with strong background in safety, security, environmental regulations, disaster planning, emergency management, and/or emergency preparedness is preferred.
  • Prior training and experience in the following areas preferred:
  • Experience in the education of adults.
  • Emergency Medical Services and/or Fire Services
  • Emergency Planning and Management
  • Hazardous Materials Management
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle license and willingness to operate motor vehicles in the course of employment.
