Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Chief of Staff for Football, the Director of Equipment Operations/Head Football Equipment Manager will be responsible for the organization and administration of Equipment Operations and be the Head Football Equipment Manager.
Responsibilities as Director of Equipment Operations:
  • Understand and support the Mission of Tennessee State University.
  • Assist in administering all aspects of the equipment department including, but not limited to staffing, payroll, cleanliness, organization, and efficiency.
  • Oversee staff (full-time, student assistants, volunteers, student managers, etc.) which will vary by time of year. Including scheduling for laundry, payroll, team building exercises, team practice and game set up delegation
  • Review all logos for all uniform, apparel, etc. that pertains to our coaches and varsity athletes prior to being screened or embroidered and/or produced by Apparel company.
  • Maintain flexible schedule, weekends, nights, early mornings. Equipment room is responsible for being open from the beginning of all varsity competitions and practices and may need to be opened for prolonged periods of times at the conclusion of all competitions and practices.
  • Assist in administering the Shoe and Apparel contract for all sports, budget for apparel, uniforms, and footwear for all head coaches, assistant coaches, varsity athletes, athletic trainers and pertinent staff who require usage of the said contract. Responsible to stay within the budget guidelines set forth by the athletic director as well as maintain the integrity of the contract with Shoe and Apparel Companies.
  • Responsible for all assignments, locks, and issues that may arise with varsity locker rooms, and men’s and women’s coaches and administrator’s locker rooms. Work with facilities in the cleanliness of lockers, reparations of lockers that may arise due to neglect, stolen property, and general usage damage.


Responsibilities as Head Football Equipment Manager:
  • Coordinate annual product review meetings with vendors and football coaches and staff
  • Oversee football athletic equipment purchases, inventory and distribution under the rules and regulations set forth by Tennessee State Athletics, NCAA, State of Tennessee, and university purchasing laws – (athletic equipment relates to all apparel worn by student-athletes, coaches and staff during practice, competition and/or workday activities and all equipment used by a team and/or staff to practice, compete and support the team).
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Yearly maintenance of John Deere Gators, lifts, field equipment, trailers, and practice clocks.
  • Travel strategy as it pertains to loading/unloading equipment truck, packing for student-athletes, coaches, and other staff members.
  • Work with Director of Athletics and Chief of Staff for Football to establish necessary athletic equipment/apparel needs for Football.
  • Communication with the proper channels to ensure the upkeep of equipment, equipment trailer and its components.
  • Ensure the proper fit of equipment for all football student-athletes as it pertains to helmets, shoulder pads, shoes, etc.
  • Develop annual and five-year budgets.
  • Facility Management as it pertains to the football locker room, coach’s locker room, equipment room and surrounding areas. Contacting the proper authorities to ensure a timely fix is done if needed.
  • Formulate and implement equipment room policies related to purchasing, equipment fitting program, computerized recordkeeping, physical inventory control, laundry, and equipment transport.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the process to launder all practice and game team clothing/uniforms.
  • Inventory control via an inventory software for all goods pertaining to the football equipment room including but not limited to: helmets, shoulder pads, apparel, footwear, game jerseys, etc. to properly submit yearly year-end inventory requested from Chief of Staff for Football.
  • Coordination with local trucking company to ensure timely departure and arrival of all equipment for road games.
  • Management and maintenance of headset system on a weekly basis in season.
  • Working with the Sports Medicine staff to ensure student-athletes safety and needs are properly taken care of
  • Continuous outlook of the everchanging innovation of athletic equipment (helmets, shoulder pads, cleats, etc.)
  • Be knowledgeable of NCAA, conference, Tennessee State Athletics, and university and/or state rules and regulations which impact all functions and procedures of this position beyond just the purchase of product and equipment.
  • Upkeep and proper storage of all field equipment for the football team
  • Coordinate with TSU’s Administration to ensure trademark provisions are adhered to and that all Tennessee State Athletics, Conference, and University school marks are properly deployed.
  • Manage the football equipment room, including supervision of staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required and at least 3 years managing Division I football equipment needs.
Certified by the Athletic Equipment Managers Association preferred.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, Internet, and Email. Excellent organization and time management skills are necessary.
Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
