The University of Miami is currently seeking a full time Director, Laboratory Services to work in Miami, FL. The Director, Laboratory Services directs and manages the overall operation, leadership, direction, and administration of the clinical laboratory, in accordance with relevant state and federal regulations. The incumbent also oversees the overall operation and administration of the assigned laboratory, including the employment of personnel that is competent in performing test procedures, and recording and reporting test results in a prompt, accurate, and proficient manner.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Ensures that consultation is available to the laboratory’s clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions.
  • Monitors testing systems developed and used for each of the tests performed in the laboratory for all aspects of performance, including pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
  • Ensures operational adherence to currently accepted technical service standards for laboratory medicine.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that the test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care.
  • Ensures that reports of test results include pertinent information required for interpretation.
  • Monitors utilization patterns of laboratory services and advises leadership and other appropriate staff of developing trends in clinical service needs.
  • Establishes standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete on-time delivery.
  • Ensures that an approved procedure manual is available to all relevant personnel.
  • Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of an operations budget to ensure compliance with organizational expenditure requirements.
  • Fosters a unified culture and promotes a process for coloration, cooperation, and teamwork.
  • Ensures that the physical plant and environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed, and provides a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Leads and directs the development, communication, and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Experience:

Minimum 7 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Draft, review, and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), protocols and reports related to laboratory processes and equipment.
  • Manage and provides operational and technical leadership for all areas in Anatomic Pathology (AP), including but not limited to histology, immunohistochemistry, cytology (pre-analytic, analytic, post-analytic), pathology and transcription.
  • Perform, assist, and support functions within laboratory as needed.
  • Monitor test results, equipment, and laboratory information systems.
  • Resolve issues in AP workflow, personnel, and equipment.
  • Ensure the laboratory maintains the CAP and CLIA licensure
  • Plan and organize operations and resources to ensure effective and efficient delivery of patient care consistent with applicable laws, standards, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with departmental pathologists and other known experts and regulatory authorities on such technical issues as technical procedures, Quality Assurance, and appropriateness of testing.
  • Organize the workflow to result in optimum efficiency utilizing appropriate metrics to maximize the departmental operational efficiencies.
  • Collaboratively work with the laboratory supervisor(s) of assigned lab sections to ensure all competency assessments, proficiency tests and other quality control activities are completed in a timely fashion and according to manufacture / regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists laboratory supervisor(s) in re-organizing specimen flow as needed.
  • Lead laboratory supervisor(s) and section staff in process improvement activities within the assigned lab sections to ensure all operational goals and standards are achieved.

Department Specific Education:

Bachelor’s degree in field relevant to laboratory medicine

Department Specific Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple projects while delivering quality service and achieving business results.
  • Demonstrates solid clinical proficiency and knowledge to effectively plan and coordinate patient services consistent with applicable laws, standards, and regulations.
  • Expert technical and operational knowledge of pathology services, operations, and workflows and understanding how these factors impact other department operations.
