Assistant Medical Laboratory Director

Position Summary
The role of the Assistant Laboratory Director reports to the Directory of Laboratory. This position is responsible for overseeing personnel, performance of testing and regulatory compliance within the laboratory, and directs the laboratory in the absence of the Director of Laboratory and Medical Director. This position will be responsible for maintaining efficient and effective working relationships with internal and external relationship as it relates to the Laboratory. This position oversees the management of testing processes and ensures that all local, state, and federal regulations are met.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Create staffing schedule and ensure proper staffing levels are maintained by evaluating patient census and required routine tasks as it relates to the Laboratory
- Interview, hire, evaluate staff performance, and when necessary, assist in resolving complex employee relations matters
- Ensure that all Washington Regional policies and procedures are effectively communicated to and implemented by all staff
- Continuously monitor and review Laboratory workflow processes, identify issues, and implement performance optimization strategies
- Ensure accreditation, legal, and medical compliance are managed and maintained and remain knowledgeable regarding regulations at the local, state, and federal level
- Assist with testing in the clinical departments, specimen processing, and related tasks, as needed
- Partner with department educator to develop, implement, and provide education and training to staff
- Effectively manage department needs including equipment, space, moves, signage, cleaning, PPE, and supplies
- Assist with implementation and monitoring of department budget
- Demonstrate an understanding of and supports the philosophy of patient-centered care
- Remain available to all staff, seeking opportunities to become actively involved, lend support, address problems, and suggest areas of improvement
Qualifications
- Education:Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Science OR meet qualifications as general testing personnel in accordance with CLIA'88 regulations and have relevant medical laboratory experience
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of medical laboratory leadership experience, required. Proficiency in regulatory compliance and accreditation standards for College of American Pathologists (CAP), Association for Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), The Joint Commission, Clinical Laboratory Amendments (CLIA) and similar organizations is required.
- Licensure and Certifications: ASCP, AMT or equivalent certification
Work Environment: This position will spend 80% of time sitting while performing work in a standard office environment. This position will spend 20% of time standing and/or walking while pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. This position has exposure to communicable disease and bodily fluids. Verbal and auditory acuity to both communicate/interpret and receive test information from analyzers or via telephone is also required.
