Job Description

Director ; 2023

Part-time position, 20-25 hours per week; $30,000-35,000/year


NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. The mission of NAMI Athens is to provide education, advocacy and support for those with a mental health condition and their families. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Director is accountable for overseeing the tasks necessary to fulfill NAMI Athens’s mission, strategy, program delivery and annual plan; including legislative advocacy, community awareness, support and education to individuals and families impacted by mental health conditions.


Key Duties & Management Responsibilities:

● Reports to the Board of Directors about progress toward organizational objectives, financial status, and other issues of concern

● Recruit, hire, train, coach, supervise, and consistently provide effective, inspirational leadership to a team of volunteers, and occasional interns

● Represent NAMI Athens in the media, on matters of public policy with local, state and national elected leaders, and through speaking engagements and special initiatives to empower members and to educate the public on mental illness/wellness issues

Organizational Strategy & Program Management:

● Works with the Board, staff, affiliates, volunteers, and general membership to establish the strategic direction of the organization and carry out the mission, vision, and values

● Supervises volunteers to ensure classes, program activities, and support groups are conducted to the standard of NAMI Signature’s Program protocol

● Ensures effective systems for program evaluation, including tracking and reporting organizational information and key performance indicators, and making changes as needed

● Works to develop marketing and media strategy that promotes NAMI Athens’s mission & programming and engages a wide, diverse audience

Advocacy & Engagement:

● Build and/or support coalitions, and foster relationships among local and regional organizations, community organizations, relevant partners, and advocacy organizations

● Act as liaison with NAMI OH and NAMI National to ensure the organization maintains its affiliation with NAMI by honoring Corporate Affiliate Agreements

● Attend workshops, conferences, and meetings conducted by local, state, regional, and national organizations, and agencies to obtain up-to-date information on mental health treatment, rehabilitation, and community support programs and resources

● Attend community committees and task force meetings so that NAMI has a “seat at the table” and is “the leading voice for mental health in the Southeastern Ohio area”

● Promote good public relations in all communities across the state


Fundraising & Financial Management:

● Work with the Accountant and Board to develop an annual mission-driven budget which is approved by the Board of Directors and manage NAMI Athens’s resources within budgetary guidelines

● Create and implement a donor engagement strategy, including prospecting, research, proposal/LOI writing, relationship building activities for corporate, foundation, grant and individual giving programs

● Establishes and maintains relationships with community and partner stakeholders

● Outstanding communications skills including written, oral and public speaking

● Uses discretion in handling confidential information, incorporating all Federal, State and local privacy and confidentiality requirements

● Delivers group presentations

● Intermediate level computer skills

● Proficient in Microsoft/Google Office Suite, Salesforce, Quickbooks and ability to learn NAMI software applications

● Accurately represents the philosophy, services, educational and support programs of NAMI Athens to individuals, groups and the general public


Ideal Skills & Qualifications:

● Visionary and inspirational leadership skills

● Strong interest and passion for NAMI Athens’s mission, those it serves, and its board and volunteers

● Candidates with personal experience living with one’s own mental health condition or that of a loved one are strongly encouraged to apply

● Previous leadership experience in the role of Manager, Director or equivalent experience

● Highly skilled in leadership/administration including budgeting, financial management, programs management, advocacy, community engagement, strategic planning, and staff/volunteer supervision

● Skilled in fundraising, including managing and cultivating new donors, grantors, major gifts, matching gifts and other fundraising opportunities or willing to learn these skills

● Excellent communications skills, including verbal and written communication and presentation skills

● Experience in program development, delivery, and management of programs for those persons with serious mental illness and experience with suicide prevention programs and practices

● Experience in working effectively with a Board of Directors and grassroots volunteers

● Understanding of the criminal justice and homelessness systems

● Understanding of co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders

● Ability to establish, cultivate, and maintain effective and robust working relationships with grassroots volunteers and people with lived experience with mental illness

Common/Ongoing Duties Performed:

● Serve as fiscal agent for CIT, Athens County Suicide Prevention Coalition & other entities as requested by the Athens Hocking Vinton 317 Board

● Serve on CIT planning committee, help plan and execute annual CIT training

● Create marketing materials and promote events and programming

● Plan, procure, manage and oversee multiple special events throughout the year including: Mental Health Awareness Month, Memorial Day Ceremony, Walk the Walk, Annual Meeting, BBQ/Picnic, Bonfire, Thank you events for local mental health workers, etc.

● Review voicemail and return phone calls concerning business operations, assistance to those struggling with mental health issues or their family members and linkage to community resources

● Retrieve mail from ABH, file accordingly and pay bills

● Coordinate all accounting needs with MS Accounting (990 prep, payroll, other documents)

● Serve on ACSPC executive committee as treasurer

● Serve as liaison in community partnerships, meet with stakeholders

● Coordinate maintenance of the nature trail, procure help, process payment and request quarterly payment of grant money from ABH

● Coordinate letter writing campaign including procuring additional donors, correspondence and tracking
