About the role
We are currently looking for a detail-oriented, organized and collaborative Director, Inventory to join our dynamic, high-growth beauty company. This role will report directly to our Assistant Controller.
The Director, Inventory will be responsible for continued development, implementation, maintenance, and financial/operating reporting of inventory and our cost of goods sold. The Director will manage a team of two employees and partner with the operations and supply chain teams to maintain the current control environment while implementing new processes as the Company expands its manufacturing and distribution capabilities and implements a new financial system. The Director will also have a hands-on role in executing monthly financial and operational reporting surrounding inventory, with responsibility for performing inventory and cost analysis, and maintaining financial reports, records, and general ledgers.
The ideal candidate has a CPA and brings 9+ years of experience in Accounting, including supervision or management of accounting teams, and at least 3+ years of audit experience from a global or national Accounting firm and Inventory accounting experience. Public company experience as well as CPG experience is a plus. This position is based can be based in any of our e.l.f. offices (Oakland, L.A. or NYC) or can be fully remote.
Detailed Responsibilities and Requirements
Responsibilities:
Corporate Accounting
- Evaluate, develop, implement, and monitor accounting and operational policies and procedures for inventory areas, with an emphasis on improving accuracy and timeliness, reducing risk, and strengthening compliance; especially the reduction of manual, Excel-based activities.
- Respond to business and finance requests based on the ongoing changes in the supply chain.
- Act as inventory liaison for external auditors for audits, including reviewing and/or preparing work papers for the auditors and analyzing data. Collaborate with internal team and external and internal auditors to ensure successful audit results and compliance.
- This role will be our in-house inventory expert, covering all accounting matters as it pertains to our inventory lifecycle throughout the supply chain – from purchase to in-bound transit, customs, tariffs, warehousing, out-bound transit, inventory reserves, and any other element impacting the cost of our goods.
- Provide guidance on the quarterly cycle count process, wall to wall physical inventory observations and system reconciliations with the Operations team. Collaborates to resolve inventory variances between book and physical inventory values.
- Assist in the assessment of system requirements for the accounting department, as it pertains to inventory, to support organization growth; assist in ERP and other accounting systems implementations.
- Responsible for the day-to-day inventory accounting which includes reviewing period-end entries and account reconciliations for inventory related areas of the company's operations such as, prepaid inventory, inventory, inventory reserves, inventory in transit, inventory received not billed, landed cost accruals, operational accruals, cost of goods sold, and inventory adjustments.
- Performs transactional and financial research to analyze internal and external impacts related to inventory, inventory reserves, landed cost, margin, for variances and reasonability.
Technical Accounting Based on US GAAP
- Research US GAAP, document thorough analysis and accounting treatment conclusions for non-routine areas.
- Document key estimates and judgments based on historical trends and benchmarked research.
Project Management and Execution
- Participate in process and post-system implementation improvement projects.
- Flexibly support the finance and executive team on ad-hoc requests.
- Lead Accounting related system or automation projects.
- Other projects as requested by management.
- Document business continuity plans and test plans semi-annually.
- Participate in accounting operational effectiveness projects.
Requirements:
Basic Requirements
- Inventory accounting experience required.
- Public Company experience and/or consumer products company experience a plus
- CPA is required with 3+ years of audit experience from a global or national Accounting firm (Big 4 a plus)
- Advanced knowledge and experience in Excel and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Excellent knowledge and application of US GAAP
- Direct experience with Accounting ERP systems (NetSuite and SAP, preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with 9+ years Accounting experience, including supervision and management of accounting staff.
