Job Description

The College of Nursing is seeking a Director, that will provide leadership, direction, and coordination in the Felton Student Success Center at the College of Nursing (student services). Foremost, this person will be responsible for leading the creation and application of a new organizational structure for the College of Nursing’s student services department that promotes and fosters teamwork in an inclusive culture and ensures that it properly reflects the College of Nursing vision, mission, and goals and adheres to applicable policies and regulations. Key administrative abilities include: development and implementation of strategies to improve student recruitment, retention, and progression; financial acumen; relationship development with internal and external constituents; and program evaluation.

Key Areas of Responsibilities

Leadership, direction, and coordination in the Felton Student Success Center at the College of Nursing

  • Oversee financial planning and management of the unit including but not limited to creating budgets, authorizing expenditures, and advocating for funding to meet retention program goals.
  • Serve as a liaison to Division Heads and Associate Deans.
  • Provide direct supervision for Felton Student Success Center team.
  • Direct, plan, and oversee the day-day operations and activities of the Felton Student Success Center with emphasis on creating an inclusive environment.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a strategic plan for the Felton Student Success Center.
  • Represent the College of Nursing to the University of Iowa, stakeholders, community partners, and collaborators as needed.
  • Ensure the Felton Student Success Center is staffed appropriately, and position descriptions are updated regularly.
  • Develop assessment processes for programs designed to support the student experience, recruitment, retention, and progression.

Recruit, Admit, and Retain Prospective and Current Students for all Academic Programs in the College of Nursing

  • In collaboration with Associate Deans, ensure robust student recruitment, admissions, and advising across all programs at College of Nursing.
  • Facilitate and ensure interaction among Felton Student Success Center staff and university central academic services such as the offices for student financial aid, registrar, and student disabilities services.
  • Ensure members of the Felton Student Success Center are equipped with best practices for engaging new and continuing students.
  • Develop a team who can enhance nursing student experiences.
  • Propose programming to support all students from admission to graduation.

Enrollment Management

  • Oversee strategic planning for and implementation of enrollment management for all academic programs.
  • Ensure adequate services to support transfer student outreach and programming focused on recruitment, student transition, academic success, and retention of incoming transfer students.
  • Advise faculty, staff, and senior leaders about curricular and demographic trends at community colleges.

Academic Standards and Curricular Policies

  • Collaborate with others in resolving and escalating student concerns and grievances and positively impacts overall student satisfaction.
  • Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Academic Associate Deans to provide oversight for the procedures that govern student appeal processes over violations of the College of Nursing student conduct policies.

Communication and Outreach

  • Collaborate with College of Nursing Marketing and Communication team on Felton Student Success Center events and activities.
  • Liaison with Office of Student Financial Aid, Office of the Registrar and Student Disability Services (in collaboration with Faculty Services).
  • Serve as liaison to Graduation Services regarding commencement ceremonies and degree conferral.
  • Build and foster key relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic direction and organizational leadership for large scale communications (e.g., admission policy changes, changes in degree requirements).
  • Collaborate with marketing and communication team, academic program leaders, staff, and faculty to promote the academic programs.

Required Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with diverse populations.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards
  • Demonstrated constructive and collaborative relationship building skills with a variety of individuals and groups including peers, leadership, and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing in a creative and fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret information (e.g. ideas, data, and needs) through appropriate communication methods and behaviors to provide excellent customer service and maintain working relationships.
  • Extensive experience in various aspects of student life such as admissions, orientation, advising and other programs designed to impact student retention.
  • Masters degree in higher education and/or student affairs or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated successful leadership experience in higher education/student affairs and/or academic program management.

Desired Qualifications


  • Knowledge of University systems (MAUI, ICON, etc.).
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in data collection, analysis, management, and program assessment.
  • Extensive experience with University of Iowa policies and procedures.
  • Extensive experience managing diverse teams and effectively developing/utilizing staff talent.
  • Doctorate in related field
