About Our Job
The City and County of Denver is seeking a Deputy Chief of Staff of Outreach to lead and implement the Mayor’s Vision and Strategy for outreach from the Mayor’s Office. The Deputy Chief of Staff of Outreach is a member of the City and County of Denver’s executive body and is responsible for setting and operationalizing CCD’s broader vision, strategy, and goals within the Mayor’s Office.

As the Deputy Chief of Staff of Outreach you will lead a team of community outreach professionals within the Mayor’s Office.

A successful candidate will be someone who can generate innovative and nuanced solutions to complex challenges, provide strategic vision, anticipate challenges, and assess the effectiveness of our work.

Please note, all City and County of Denver Appointee positions will be in-person roles. We believe we can listen better, learn more, and act faster when we are able to build strong relationships in the same physical space. With this in mind, we do our work together in person. We value in-person interactions. Our office is not remote.

The salary range for this position is $146,005 - 248,209.

Additionally, as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Outreach, you will:
  • Mayor’s Office Coordination: Coordinate daily with the Chief of Staff, the Deputy Chief of Staff of Administration, the Chief of Policy, and other Mayor’s Office professionals to ensure effective communication and synergy between the community and government entities.
  • Neighborhood Outreach: Oversee a team of neighborhood outreach professionals, who will embed within Denver’s neighborhoods to understand first-hand the needs of our diverse communities.
  • Policy Recommendations: Provide guidance and recommendations to senior officials on community and government relations matters. This involves staying informed about emerging trends, best practices, and legislation related to community engagement and government affairs. Utilize this knowledge to develop policies and strategies that foster strong relationships between the City of Denver and its residents.
  • Community Engagement: Oversee community engagement efforts, including public meetings, addressing concerns, and promoting community-oriented practices. You will be responsible for actively engaging with community members, listening to their concerns, and collaborating with them to develop strategies that address their specific needs and priorities.
  • Community Relations: Develop and implement strategic initiatives that enhance community relations within the City of Denver. This involves analyzing community dynamics, conducting research, and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and create effective action plans.
  • Community Partnerships: Fostering partnerships between community organizations, local government agencies, and other stakeholders to promote positive relationships and address community needs. Develop and maintain relationships with government agencies, community leaders, and stakeholders. This includes representing the City of Denver in various community and government forums, fostering collaboration, and advocating for the city's interests.
  • Labor Relations: Oversee a Director of Labor Relations, responsible for relationship development with Denver’s labor unions and coordination across city agencies.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze and report on community and government relations metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of engagement initiatives. You will be responsible for analyzing relevant data and metrics to assess the impact of community and government relations efforts. This includes preparing comprehensive reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to senior leadership and the public.
  • First Lady Initiatives: Coordinate with the First Lady of Denver on key initiatives as she uses her platform to advocate for issues, promote change, and improve our city.
  • Interdepartmental Coordination: Coordinate with all agencies and departments within the City and County of Denver, including agency heads, community engagement teams, and government affairs teams to ensure effective communication and synergy between the Mayor’s Office and city agencies.
About You
We are looking for candidates that demonstrate experience in the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Possess a deep understanding of community and government relations principles, practices, and challenges. This includes familiarity with community engagement strategies, government affairs, public policy, stakeholder management, and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and navigate sensitive situations. Effective communication with community members, government officials, and other stakeholders is crucial.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop innovative solutions to complex community and government relations issues. They should possess analytical skills to assess data, identify trends, and make informed decisions that enhance community engagement and government relations outcomes.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills to effectively oversee and coordinate community and government relations initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of successfully leading teams, managing complex projects, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders in the community and government sectors.
  • Extensive experience in crisis management and emergency response, as it relates to community and government relations. This includes familiarity with emergency planning, incident command systems, and coordination of response efforts during emergencies, disasters, or other critical incidents that impact the community and require government involvement.
  • Strong policy development and implementation skills are essential for the Director of Community and Government Relations. They should have experience in analyzing policy issues, conducting research, and translating findings into actionable policies and procedures. Knowledge of legislative processes and the ability to work with lawmakers is also beneficial.
  • Cultural Competency and Equity Awareness: Given Denver's diverse community, the candidate should possess cultural competency and awareness of equity issues. They should be able to develop communication strategies that resonate with diverse populations, promote inclusivity, and address equity considerations in messaging and engagement efforts.
  • Experience in community engagement strategies, including the ability to work collaboratively with community groups, stakeholders, and diverse populations. Candidates should possess cultural sensitivity and the ability to address community concerns and foster inclusive and equitable community participation.
