Job Description
Job Summary


This position aids in providing efficient, effective, and economical quality laboratory services. Acts as a receptionist to greet all visitors to the lab; accurately interpret and enter physician written or verbal orders into the laboratory information system; act as the laboratory customer service representative to answer or redirect all incoming phone calls; perform general office secretarial duties, and other duties as assigned.


Minimum Job Requirements


  • Successfully completed a medical terminology course or be willing to successfully complete a medical terminology course within 12 months from date of hire.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.


Skills / Knowledge / Abilities


  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
  • Developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.


Working Conditions


  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • High risk of accidental exposure to potentially hazardous body fluid, tissues, and various chemicals used in the processing and testing of specimens.
  • Typical office environment with prolonged sitting.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions.
  • Possible risk of injury from various sharp objects routinely used in collecting specimens for laboratory procedures.
  • Works with protected health information.


Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment


  • Requires lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Use of personal computer and other standard office equipment including but not limited to: telephone, fax, copier, calculator, and scanners.
  • Repetitive wrist, finger and hand movement.
  • Requires lifting supplies or equipment up.
  • Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, reports or files.
