The Scoop:
The Database Administrator performs database and software life-cycle activities to ensure the highest level of system performance and availability in compliance with business requirements. This position partners with other Information Technology team members to accomplish planning, implementation, and maintenance of database related infrastructure for legacy and new business application systems. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, and availability of multiple database(s). Other key job duties include disaster recovery, performance analysis and tuning, index maintenance and monitoring of data. Additionally, server administration, monitoring and maintenance responsibilities will be required to ensure systems are performing optimally and securely.

- Documents findings and recommendations for use in decision making and further system design
- Develops, documents, automates, and assesses DBA processes while looking for ways to improve current processes and streamline efforts
- Implements data models and database designs, data access and table maintenance codes
- Creates, monitors, and maintains company databases by responding to a variety of internal and external database customer requests and assignments from management
- Assists with related task planning, training and technical direction of other DBA’s or IT software engineers and developers
- Researches and recommends current and trending database technologies that offer the organization ways to improve its level of service to customers and maintains its leading edge over competitors
- Provides technical leadership and advice for the company’s use of relational database and related technologies
- Provide leadership and guidance on large, complex, and cross functional projects and tasks
- Assist in creating and troubleshooting stored procedures
- Main responsibilities include working with company defined (MS SQL) software installations; user and schema creation, maintenance, and auditing; data mapping, loading, and quality control; backup and recovery; space and runtime performance tuning; monitoring and maintenance of data replication processes; and development of supporting scripts and procedures
- Acts as a mentor to less experienced DBA staff and/or staff in other IT functions
- Assists in maintaining plans for disaster recovery and failover capabilities and testing
- Analyzes, validates, creates, and designs data models, structures, and processes
- Lead coordination of incident management and performing regular systems maintenance
- Provides peer reviews for work produced by other DBA’s and/or software engineers
- Provides on-call support after hours and on weekends (on a rotational basis) per the department’s on-call agreement to meet SLA’s and metrics
- Provides database back-up, archiving, monitoring, data analysis and troubleshoots data issues
- Develops documentation for the assessment and automation of repeatable processes
- Provides performance tuning and capacity planning services; leads conversions and upgrades
- Maintains security according to company guidelines and works closely with the IT Security team to develop additional robust solutions
- Plans, performs, and implements data modeling
- Collaborate with external EDI vendors and service providers to ensure effective delivery of services and solutions
- Resolves database performance issues and errors, database capacity issues, replication, and other distributed data issues
- Drives the development of (and adherence to) data modeling standards, methods, and practices
- Trains others on the IT DBA Development Team and within the Information Technology department on databases related to repeatable processes
Supervisory Responsibilities
No supervisory responsibilities, however, this position acts as technical lead for workflow distribution.
Education and/or Experience
For consideration candidates will need:
- Twelve (12+) years’ related experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Prior experience in a Technical Lead capacity is desirable
Computer Skills
- MS SQL programming and databases, as well as a solid understanding of latest technologies and programming languages
- Knowledge of network protocols
- Working experience with server administration and server technologies including Windows Server, IIS, and Active Directory
- Strong proficiency in database interfacing and relational database management systems (RDBMS such as MS SQL or similar)
- Solid working knowledge of current data platform technologies, data modeling tools and metadata management
- Thorough knowledge of software methodologies, distributed networking, databases, and multiprocessing applications
- Hardware architecture, disk arrays, drives and hardware capacity requirements
- Excellent working knowledge of a T/SQL programming language
- MS SQL relational database architecture, design, and maintenance
- Experience with design, development, design patterns, and complete application development lifecycle
