WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM with Stand-by hours
This position requires an individual to collect process, package, transport, store, and dispose of evidence obtained in criminal investigations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this position.
- Receives and account for criminal evidence and impounded, lost, and abandoned property, process evidence and property.
- Completes detailed crime scene reports.
- Assumes responsibility for crime scene investigation activities during an assigned shift and on an on-call basis.
- Testifying in court proceedings; and other duties as assigned
- Correct disposition of property and evidence items including transporting and delivery to authorized locations, returning items to citizens, or destruction if no longer needed.
- Recovers fingerprints from crime scenes and evidence submitted.
- Completes required documents to initiate and maintain chain of custody.
- Prepare and maintain criminal evidence and impounded property records and reports.
- Recovers fingerprints of the deceased during autopsies.
- Actively participate in meetings, conferences, and trainings.
- Examines crime scenes to document, preserve, collect, photograph, video and identify physical evidence.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Maintains evidence lockers, keeping them in a neat and orderly condition.
Associate Degree in forensic science or related field or one (1) year of field experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Prior experience in property and evidence management and/or crime scene investigation preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts objects up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and climbs ladders.
The work is typically performed in an office, at crime scenes, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Mathematics:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning:
Ability to establish effective working relationships with associates; ability to deal courteously with the public.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
