When you join Verizon
Verizon is one of the world’s leading providers of technology and communications services, transforming the way we connect across the globe. We’re a diverse network of people driven by our shared ambition to shape a better future. Here, we have the ability to learn and grow at the speed of technology, and the space to create within every role. Together, we are moving the world forward – and you can too. Dream it. Build it. Do it here.
What you’ll be doing...
This position is part of the Verizon Litigation group and will be based in Washington D.C. In this position, you will be responsible for a docket of regulatory litigation and government investigations. That litigation can arise in federal or state courts nationwide and typically involves one or more federal regulatory issues, such as the interpretation of Federal Communications Commission rules or preemption issues. The government investigations practice involves responding to letters of inquiry, subpoenas, and other enforcement action from the Federal Communications Commission and other federal agencies.
This position requires an experienced and motivated attorney with excellent judgment and the ability to handle a wide range of communications and business issues in high stakes matters. While you will work with outside counsel on some matters, this role is not merely a manager of outside counsel. This is a “hands on” position in which you will be responsible for drafting and preparing filings and other litigation work product, discovery, strategy, settlement negotiations, and occasional stand-up work.
More specifically, the responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating effectively and respectfully with colleagues across the company.
- Providing narrative responses and produce documents in response to investigations by the Federal Communications Commission and other federal agencies, and manage all aspects of federal enforcement actions – including the negotiation and drafting of consent decrees.
- Analyzing and providing input on best practices to avoid litigation and compliance risk.
- Engaging and closely supervising outside counsel, with the ability to drive efficient pricing with law firms on terms other than hourly billing that meets the company’s diversity goals.
- Maintaining strategic relationships and lines of communications with key stakeholders to respond to emerging threats.
- Evaluating and managing significant financial, strategic, and reputational risks to Verizon while eliciting input from key internal stakeholders and communicating effectively with senior management.
- Responding to formal and informal complaints filed against the company before federal agencies.
- Sharing and integrating lessons learned in litigation and government investigations to continuously improve company practices.
- Conducting internal investigations and addressing corresponding litigation risks and/or compliance concerns.
- Preparing and managing both affirmative and defensive court litigation at all levels and at various stages, including but not limited to pre-filing assessments, complaints and answers, motions practice, discovery, mediation / dispute resolution, trial, and appeal.
This role may be considered as part of the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program.
You’ll need to have:
- Experience at a law firm, as an in-house attorney at a large company, and/or with the federal government.
- JD and 6 or more years of litigation and/or government investigations experience.
- Active and in good standing in at least one state.
Even better if you have one or more of the following:
- Ability to interact comfortably with all levels of personnel and to deliver legal advice to executives and other senior clients.
- Strong sense of collegiality and team-minded attitude.
- Significant experience in the communications sector and with telecommunications regulations.
- Proven ability to professionally manage time, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and process a high volume of work in a timely and accurate manner with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong judgment, integrity, and pragmatic thinking.
- Strong written, oral, and presentation skills.
- Experience with investigations and enforcement actions before the Federal Communications Commission.
- Proven ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
If Verizon and this role sound like a fit for you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every “even better” qualification listed above.
