CNIB invites you to build a career as unique as you! We are currently searching for a Coordinator, Public Rights! Reporting to the Program Lead, Advocacy & Accessible Community Engagement, the Coordinator, Public Rights will establish and manage the Community Engagement Volunteers, as well as develop and maintain community partnerships within the GTA. The coordinator will also support the development and presentation of diverse community programs and projects. These programs will help the broader GTA community, people with vision loss and the CNIB foundation explore and address how sight loss intersects with issues of ethnicity, gender, race, religion, social class, national origin, sexual orientation and other multicultural issues.
Your impact at CNIB
  • Support the evaluation, development and perform best practices for assessing the Diversity Strategy.
  • Collaborate with Community Engagement Volunteers to build community, foster a sense of belonging, create a more inclusive environment and support people who are blind and partially sighted from diverse backgrounds and social identities.
  • Conduct research on potential community partners and use various outreach methods either via phone, virtually or email to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Respond to individual advocacy concerns from our community and escalate when required.
  • Facilitate multicultural education training, presentations, and programs to explore and provide critical reflection on intersecting issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, social class, national origin, sexual orientation and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity.
  • Coordinate, plan, implement, and evaluate Diversity strategy related programs, projects and initiatives.
  • Provide educational tools and resources to support community partners and allies provide equitable services to people with sight loss from diverse backgrounds.
  • Attend virtual or in person community events pertaining to inclusion and diversity for learning and outreach purposes.
  • Create and distribute communications to community partners, Diversity Community Engagement Volunteers, and staff across CNIB.
  • Assist the Program Lead, Advocacy and Accessible Community Engagement in the coordination and facilitation of GTA Community Engagement Volunteer programs.
Requirements
Who you are:
  • Sound professional judgment and a strong sense of ethics.
  • Ability to use personal computers for word processing and database management.
  • Knowledgeable on inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.
  • Self advocacy and/or advocacy experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people with sight loss and/or people from different social, cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively and successfully in engaging in a global and multicultural climate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent community building; passion for advocacy, community engagement, inclusion and diversity; ability to relate well to diverse community groups, volunteers, staff and others from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and amicable personality.
We want to hear from you if you have:
  • At least two years of related experience in developing or implementing programs and events focused on issues of accessibility, difference, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
Eligibility
This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must:
  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
Work Environment
  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Travel across the region will be required.
