Job Description
A Bergen County, NJ Real Estate Owner and Management company, with primarily 4,000 multi-family units, including Office and Retail, is in search of a self-directed and experienced Controller to oversee financial and accounting activities.


This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who thrives in a busy work palace, and is well-versed in working closely with senior management. Competitive salary offered.


The successful Controller candidate will be responsible for (but not necessarily limited to) the following:


  • Collaborate with the external public accounting firm to manage interim reporting and year-end tax preparation
  • Develop, implement, and enforce accounting policies and procedures
  • Develop the annual budget and subsequent re-forecasts
  • Maintain an accurate general ledger and manage month end closes
  • Assist with the operation of the business including providing financial reports needed for mortgage applications, ensuring compliance with all lender reporting requirements, monitoring compliance with lease terms for all commercial tenant leases, and recording property acquisitions, sales, and mortgage loans
  • Oversee a staff of 8 property accountants
  • Prepare and review financial statements prior to presentation to senior management, including actual versus budget variance analysis for various property holdings
  • Reconcile daily cash balances and prepare cash flow analysis/projections
  • Work closely with Property Management team to ensure best accounting practices are being utilized.
  • Analyze and assess new ventures for accounting and tax implications


Ideal candidates for the Controller position would have the following qualifications:


  • A degree in accounting or finance (CPA/MBA preferred)
  • 5-10 years of experience as a controller
  • Strong PC skills including G/L software packages, MS Word, and MS Excel (VLOOKUP and pivot tables in particular)
  • Experience working in property management companies preferred but not required
  • Audit experience is a plus
  • Experience managing/mentoring staff
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
