Position Summary
OpenStax (part of Rice University) is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research. Our mission is to provide every student and instructor with free access to high-quality teaching and learning resources that help them succeed in their educational journey. We have created a library of more than 50 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served millions of students across the globe, resulting in over one billion dollars in savings. We have created additional software and course materials to help students read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning. OpenStax seeks to become an organization that continuously strives to learn, reflect, and make actionable better policies and practices for diversity, equity, and inclusivity at work and in education.
The Content Manager I role is central to the success of OpenStax and its products. Primary responsibilities include developing content markup specifications, ensuring quality of content as it is produced on OpenStax platforms, and finally, publishing content directly to users. Through these duties, content managers contribute to a variety of OpenStax products, including online, PDF, and print textbooks, and other formats. The Content Manager I is expected to troubleshoot and resolve most issues or queries related to producing or maintaining content on OpenStax platforms. This individual should develop knowledge of OpenStax’s content production workflow and be able to address related queries from the OpenStax team and provide support to fellow content managers to resolve problems related to content production or maintenance. This individual must have a strong knowledge of Github, and XML and MathML markup in order to assist fellow team members. Content managers are expert in content production methods, and participate from the early stages of content development by advising on markup and platform solutions to meet market needs. This entails collaboration with external vendors to develop new content and maintain OpenStax’s growing library. The Content Manager I also tests code rollouts, working closely with developers who maintain OpenStax platforms and refine styling and functionality of the content. In addition, this position provides support to end users by assisting the marketing and customer support teams. The Content Manager I reports to the Assistant Director of Content Development. This is not a position with our marketing department.
Ideal candidates should not only have knowledge of markup languages and experience in publishing, maintaining digital content, in quality assurance, or in professional or technical writing, but also be extremely meticulous with their work, editing with a critical eye as the position deals heavily in maintenance and upkeep of the OpenStax library with emphasis on quality assurance.
