Perform journey-level work in the following skilled trades areas: constructing, remodeling, repairing, and maintaining of buildings, facilities, utilities, machinery, and equipment at Friday Harbor Labs.

Under general supervision, perform construction, maintenance and repair work on institution facilities. Duties includes erecting buildings and facilities such as storage facilities, pumphouses, offices and Labs, with complete mechanical and electrical systems as well as major remodels with space utilization changes involving removing and installing walls and installing all associated mechanical and electrical systems and fixtures.

This position is located in Friday Harbor, WA and there are two positions open.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Construct and remodel facilities in accordance with project requirements; assist in the preparation of engineering data
  • Repair or alter buildings and other structures such as offices, laboratories, greenhouses, shops, sheds, barns, partitions, walk-in coolers, from plans, sketches or instruction
  • Construct new facilities from blueprints and specifications;
  • Install, repair and maintain electrical, mechanical, and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution systems
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain boilers, heating and ventilating systems, power distribution systems, refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems
  • Fabricate, assemble, test, repair, and maintain apparatus, equipment and components from sheet metal, steel, plexiglass, wood and related material for research applications and plant operations
  • Estimate material needs and recommend purchases of commercially available components and equipment
  • Prepare drawings and maintain documentation of construction and alteration projects
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair work on all types of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment
  • Operate motorized equipment such as cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, trenchers, and related equipment incidental to the construction and remodel of facilities.
  • Operate equipment related to grounds keeping such as riding mowers, string trimmers and chain saws.
  • Assist in grounds work as needed.
  • Assist journey-level workers in other trades areas;
  • May direct helpers
  • Perform related duties as required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in at least two skilled trades areas;
    OR
  • Full journey status in two skilled trades unions OR equivalent education/experience.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certifications and/or significant trade experience relating to carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills.
