Job Description
Overview:
Summary:

The Concrete Materials Laboratory Supervisor’s primary function is to train Concrete materials technicians, develop core processes and Standard Operating Procedures related to Concrete and Mortar Lab equipment and test procedures. The Concrete Laboratory Supervisor will inspect daily schedules and performance of the Concrete Materials Laboratory Technicians and report to the Laboratory Manager and ensure a high-quality product efficiently and effectively.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly work environment in accordance with company and OSHA expectations
  • Manage inventory process and levels of lab and equipment inventory
  • Use lab equipment to obtain, prepare, measure, and collect test specimens in lab or field environments
  • Train technicians to construct, calibrate, and/or prepare test samples and test equipment
  • Keep current with industry technologies, skills and knowledge, improving company procedures and individual growth
  • Maintain safety manuals, and standard operating procedures to test procedures and equipment within the concrete and mortar laboratory
  • Implement alternative procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy when appropriate and train staff in all new procedures
  • Demonstrate leadership by assisting in other areas within the department and other departments as needed
  • Ensure lab tools and equipment are in good working order and facilitate repairs or replacements as needed

Global Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all Mortar and Concrete Laboratory Technicians and report to the Laboratory Manager
  • This job may require additional duties not listed above and the employee may be asked to perform those duties to meet business needs
  • Regular attendance and physical presence at work is an essential function of this position

Qualifications:

Education/Specialized Knowledge/Professional Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of Ready-mix manufacturing design, processes, and equipment is a plus, but not necessary State DOT and ACI certification is a plus, but not necessary
  • Associates degree preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong PC skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment to achieve company objectives
  • Ability to learn and apply testing standards (ASTM and AASHTO)
  • Quick learner; excellent organizational skills

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible in work assignments; open to working in multiple areas as necessary to get the job done
  • Must be able to work through stressful situation while maintaining professionalism and composure
  • Noise level is usually moderate, but can be high and requires personal hearing protection on occasion at job sites, plants, and laboratories
  • Work duties will be performed primarily in a laboratory with some possible field work; local travel required
  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, heavy construction equipment, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions
  • Fast-paced environment with a need to respond to ever changing scenarios

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand and move about job sites with uneven and unpaved ground
  • Lift/Carry up to 55 pounds frequently
  • Must be able to frequently bend in order to obtain samples from stockpiles or ground, climb ladders with buckets of admixtures, and push wheelbarrows of concrete
  • Must be able to work long and flexible hours as necessary
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to maneuver in and around our plants, yards and job sites as necessary
  • Must be able to operate buttons, levers, and other controls located on various equipment
  • Lift up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Regularly required to talk or hear, frequently is required to stand; walk; use hand to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms
