Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
This new research study focuses on interventions that aim to increase physical activity among residents of Boston Public Housing Developments. A Healthy Living Advocate (or HLA) is a trusted member and resident of the community and (optimally) lives at one of Boston's Family-Designated Public Housing Developments. This role will involve working as a member of the research team and serve as a liaison for one of the intervention groups of the study. The HLA is creative and highly motivated and consider themselves to be physically active - preferably enjoys morning walks. The HLA will cultivate relationships with participants to understand and support them in managing their physical activities. The HLA will connect with participants in person, lead walks on marked walking trails around the developments. Additionally, the HLA is comfortable working with families and children during all physical activities.
An informed and integral member of the General Internal Medicine Section, the Healthy Living Advocate will coordinate clinical research activities. They will work in a multidisciplinary environment on- and off-campus, with all appropriate members of the research team. The position requires being on-site in Boston, in community-based public housing developments, where the HLA will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to study sites and follow COVID-safety protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and respect for the culture of the participant
  • Works with participants to set goals around physical activities and motivates them to achieve those goals
  • Completes Human Subjects Protection Certification prior to working on protocols
  • Establishes indoor exercise activities
  • Assists in project planning, and ensures that pre-established work scope, study protocol, and regulatory requirements are followed
  • Lead multiple walking events throughout the week using newly designed and marked walking trails around public housing developments
  • Schedules walks at timeframes which are suitable for the participation of most members of the community
  • Demonstrates the ability to function within an inter-disciplinary team
  • Plans, implements, and maintains data collection systems in support of research protocol; may coordinate the collection and analysis of research data
  • Performs other duties as specified by supervisor
  • Meets regularly with supervisor, director, and others as assigned, to accept and/or carry out work assignments
  • Prepares reports and documents as needed or requested
  • Reinforces educational messages regarding physical activity
  • Generates reports for Principal Investigator, sponsoring agency, Institutional Review Board, etc., as needed
  • Ensures research projects, databases, and/or protocols follow Human Subject Protection Federal Regulations and hospital policies for conducting clinical research and/or collecting data into databases
  • Documents relevant study activities
  • Establishes creative ideas to implement during all physical activity meetings
  • Ensures on-going data integrity for the project by developing process improvements and ensuring completeness of information

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • None required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Community-based experience is preferred but not required

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Enjoys and can endure physical activity, such as walking every day
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database programs, email, data entry and web browsers
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information
  • Excellent time management skills, including ability to multi-task and prioritize essential tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; cultural sensitivity and comfort interacting with a wide range of social, racial, and ethnic populations
  • Requires good organizational skills
  • Will complete a training program consisting of Human Subjects Protection Certification, First Aid/CPR training, and the study protocol
