Located in the heart of the Baltimore/Washington corridor, Prince George’s County borders Washington D.C. and is just 37 miles south of the city of Baltimore. Encompassing almost 500 square miles, with over 900,000 residents Prince George's County has an urban atmosphere that still manages to provide a scenic and peaceful place to live, work, and play.
About the Position:
This full-performance professional work provides a wide range of tasks to assist peers (clients in recovery) in gaining or regaining independence and mastery over their recovery process. Support services help to reduce and alleviate barriers that impact a client's sobriety and are achieved through comprehensive care coordination. Peer Recovery Specialists employ systems of care rooted in a trauma-informed approach to improving outcomes. Services are non-clinical and community-based. Community referrals are received from local substance use treatment providers, medical providers, domestic violence programs, recovery centers, the Department of Social Services, and from the courts. Work is performed under the general supervision of a high-level supervisor. Work performance is evaluated in terms of quality, timeliness, and resourcefulness

Examples of Work

  • Provides support by listening, sharing of recovery experiences, and discussing strengths individuals have to support and sustain their own recovery.
  • Develops and maintains automated client record in the agency's and the state's electronic medical record systems in accordance with identified guidelines.
  • Serves as a role model and practical living example of recovery.
  • Conducts Peer Recovery Support groups for clients.
  • Provides assistance with establishing and setting recovery goals and plans, which include culturally competent and relevant services.
  • Completes all client contact documentation while adhering to professional standards and accordance with the Behavioral Health Services Division's requirements.

Qualifications

What You'll Need:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle
  • Graduation from high school, supplemented by college level course work in business, psychology or sociology, and six (6) months experience in work requiring independent action based on mature judgment.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with local resources and treatment centers in Prince George's County, MD
  • Familiarity with Prince George's County Government Policies and Procedures.
  • A minimum of three years of recovery from lived-experience in substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Experience working with Epic medical record system
  • Certified as a Peer Recovery Specialist in the state of Maryland by the Maryland Addictions and Behavioral Health Certification Board (MABPCB)
  • Six years or more providing recovery services to residents of Prince George's County

Additional Information

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Participate as an "Essential" employee in the department's snow and ice control program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
