Summary
The Peer Support Specialist should be able to draw upon personal life experience in his/her work with clients and feel comfortable with the self-disclosure of some aspects of those experiences with mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and/or treatment and recovery, while maintaining appropriate boundaries. The Peer Support Specialist is a fully integrated team member who provides highly individualized services in the community and promotes individual self-determination and decision-making. The Peer Support Specialist also provides essential expertise and consultation to the Community Paramedic team, peer agencies, families and patient to promote a culture in which each individual’s point of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership and management
  • Develop, implement, and manage overdose response/follow-up program in coordination with partner agencies such as law enforcement, EMS, hospital emergency department, and treatment clinics.
  • Modeling effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers
  • Accompanying clients to meetings and participates in meetings of community groups to advocate for consumer needs, leading recovery dialogues/self-help sessions with clients
  • Assisting clients by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance as needed
  • Providing advice to clients on empowerment skills and successful community living
  • Collect and input data gathered from on call events that could be shared with various agencies
  • Promotes wellness management strategies, which includes delivering therapeutic interventions (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Planning or Illness Management and Recovery) and employment services.
