Job Title: College and Next Steps Counselor

School Overview
Over Drew Charter School’s twenty-year history, the school has grown to serve grades PreK-12 with nearly 1,900 students in a “cradle-to-college” pipeline, including two onsite early learning partners. Drew implements a rigorous and supportive educational continuum, which includes tailored Response to Intervention (RTI) support, a rigorous STEAM/Project-Based Learning (PBL) instructional model, and a robust College and Career Readiness program. Every element has been thoughtfully designed to ensure all students succeed and to eliminate opportunity gaps and inequities in educational outcomes for our diverse population of students. Position Description
Drew Charter School is in search of a detail-oriented, passionate, experienced individual to join our growing Senior Academy College and Career Readiness Team as a College & Next Steps Counselor. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about education equity and committed to supporting all students to reach their post-secondary goals. This position will report directly to the Dean of Counseling and Wellness with a dotted line to the Lead College & Next Steps Counselor.
Performance responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Helping lead the school’s efforts in guiding students and their families through the entire college selection, application, admission and financial aid process, grades 9-12.
  • Maintaining flexibility and a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues to assist students and families throughout their unique high school journey.
  • Building and executing in-person and virtual college readiness programs, including the annual college fair, admissions case study, HBCU Night, and other post-secondary programs
  • Provide 9th and 10th graders information on college awareness and preparation using engaging and creative methods.
  • Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising and supporting caseloads of juniors, seniors, and families as they go through the process; and helping students and families make the best decision
  • Meeting with all college admissions representatives who visit our campus and facilitating meetings between college representatives and our students. The College & Next Steps Counselor also serves as a liaison with College admissions offices throughout the year.
  • Possessing an extensive knowledge about specifics of colleges, their academic programs, admissions policies and selection processes.
  • Coordinating speaker series throughout school year and various other opportunities for students to learn from a variety of school’s community partners
  • Planning in-state and out-of-state college tours
  • Providing comprehensive post-secondary readiness for a caseload of juniors and seniors.
  • Meeting with juniors and seniors, individually and in groups, to build college knowledge
  • Maintaining and disseminating information about standardized tests such as SAT and ACT, helping to administer AP and PSAT exams.
  • Belonging to professional organizations and attending conferences and meetings for those groups.
  • Crafting individualized letters of recommendation that highlight a student’s unique strengths and experiences for each senior on caseload
Education and Work Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of selective college admission and/or college counseling experience are required;
  • Master’s degree (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree (required)

  • Proficiency using Naviance/SCOIR
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (World, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-awareness, sensitivity and a commitment to a growth mindset.
  • Possesses a nuanced knowledge of the changing landscape of college admissions.
  • Desire to work independently, is a self-starter who takes initiative in the work of serving students.
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic, team-oriented office.
  • Demonstrates a strong desire to work with students and families within a diverse community.
