Essential Duties for the Clinical Research Nurse:
Pre-Initiation of Studies: The research team participates in and presents potential new studies to the Research Oversight Committee, which consists of the medical oncology team administrators, and the research team members to determine study feasibility within the UMSJMC patient population. Once the committee expresses interest in a study, the team will reach out to the sponsor to conduct a presite visit, and once selected as a site, start the process of opening the trial with the IRB of record. After all necessary documents have been received by both sponsor and the IRB; the team participates in study initiation meetings and makes necessary preparations for study-related equipment & supplies.
Patient Recruitment & Enrollment to Research Studies: The CRN screens potential research subjects for participation in clinical trials (to include review of medical history, concomitant meds, pathology, other relevant documents) and, in collaboration with the patient’s healthcare provider, evaluate eligibility of subject participation. After eligibility is confirmed, the research nurse will speak to the patient to review the trial. Once the patient agrees to participate in the trial and signatures are completed on the informed consent; collection, processing and shipment of samples (blood, urine, pharmacokinetic, tissue) for UMSJMC’s lab and sponsor (IAW sponsor protocol) will be completed. The CRN notifies the research and healthcare team, all records are updated and follow-up visits, procedures and tests are followed per study guidelines.
Patient Follow-up, Study Closeout and Other Duties: The research team uses Smartsheets to record all study activity and patient information. All amendments to the study protocol and/or consent forms are reviewed and distributed by the CRN. The CRN manages follow-up visits, maintains records pertaining to the investigational drug (or device) of the study, recognizes and documents adverse events per protocol and ensures prompt reporting to appropriate study and regulatory personnel; attends meetings to review study progress; provides support to study PIs and acts as a liaison with study sponsor on behalf of the PI(s); in collaboration with other members of the research team, prepares for and responds to study audits and queries.
With guidance, members of the team organize their own time and set priorities for research-related functions, maintain records, training requirements, etc. The CRN must prioritize their workload and manage multiple projects effectively; achieves and maintains a working knowledge of computer software specific to department, including word processing, e-mail and internet functions and is aware of and knowledgeable about departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
· Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services, requirements and competency evaluations on time;
· Compliance: Understands regulatory requirements with regard to compliance and all other laws and regulations that apply to the organizational operations (e.g. Code of Conduct) and how these regulations apply to the individual’s role/ department/ unit. Proactive in addressing compliance issues; reporting through appropriate channels such as the Research Manager or Research Administrator.
· Completes mandatory introductory and ongoing training within the specified deadlines
· Self-starter who asks questions freely, follows instructions and is comfortable working both independently and in a team environment are encouraged to apply
· Works collaboratively and supports efforts of team members. Demonstrates exceptional customer service and interacts effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, staff and the broader healthcare community.
