UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full time (100% FTE, 40 hours per week), day shift CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST (CNS) to join our team. The CNS will act as the Vascular Access Subject Matter Expert for the UW Medical Center-Northwest and the UW Medical Center-Montlake hospital campuses. Both medical centers are proud to foster a culture that is innovative and collaborative - this position will play a key role in our commitment to providing world class patient care.
The CNS is a highly visible position dedicated to the advancement of nursing practice and continuous improvement of patient care. The CNS will provide vascular access expertise and support to RNs caring for patients at the bedside. The CNS will also help drive practice changes throughout the organization. The CNS will ensure the use of national guidelines and evidence-based care to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.
This is a professional staff position, reporting directly to the Director of Professional Engagement and Nursing Excellence.
SCHEDULE
Day shifts, 40 hours per week. The CNS will split their time between the UW Medical Center-Montlake and UW Medical Center-Northwest campuses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and maintains evidence-based nursing policies and protocols as they relate to vascular access care. Promotes clinical standards and practice improvements and evaluates outcomes. Provides subject matter expertise in the care and management of:
  • Peripheral IVs & ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous lines
  • Non-tunneled central venous catheters
  • Tunneled central venous catheters
  • Implanted ports
  • Peripherally inserted central catheters
  • Intraosseous catheters

  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates vascular access educational offerings. Ensures that educational offerings enhance the quality and safety of care. Supports evidence-based practice changes across the Montlake and Northwest campuses, which includes supporting and designing curriculum for staff education days, online learning modules, and annual competencies.

  • Evaluates quality outcomes. Tracks quality indicator data and participates in associated committees. In cooperation with the Infection Prevention Team, reviews and tracks central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) data and reports out to UW Medicine Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Committee and other relevant stakeholders. Co-chairs the NVAC (Nursing Vascular Access Committee). Supports and seeks to collaborate with shared leadership committees on both campuses for vascular access-related topics.
  • Oversees house-wide initiatives related to vascular access. Leads evaluation of new vascular access products. Directs education on new or changed vascular access processes or equipment.
  • Develops collaborative, collegial relationships with staff, leaders, and providers and draws on these relationships to enhance clinical care. Fosters collegial relations with Clinical Nursing Specialists at other hospitals or agencies. Participates in professional organization activities that promote both the nursing profession as well as the profession's relationship with consumers.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN)
  • At least 4 years of vascular access nursing experience
  • An active Registered Nurse license in the State of Washington
    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for this role.
    DESIRED:
  • 2 years of nursing leadership or nursing education experience
