General Purpose of Job:
The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) represents the needs and requirements of the Medical Staff and serves as an advocate for the use of information technology in the clinical setting. The CMIO is responsible for physician engagement, adoption, standardization and optimization of clinical information systems and clinical informatics. The CMIO leads physician & clinical change management for the design and execution of technology enabled process change that maximizes patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency. The CMIO works in collaboration with Driscoll Children’s Information Services (IS) leadership, the Driscoll Children’s Epic team, Physicians, Nursing and other hospital and health plan leaders who use and rely on technology to provide safe and efficient patient care. The CMIO is an important physician leader at Driscoll Health System and will champions not only IS issues but also participates in work that supporting our Mission and furthering our strategic imperatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the liaison between the Medical Staff, IS, and the Driscoll Children’s Epic team.
  • Understand requirements of and problems reported by clinicians and communicate realistic solutions and initiatives to IS and the Epic teams.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the planning, selection, implementation, and performance assessment of clinical information systems (CIS).
  • Assist in the development of training programs on CIS for clinicians.
  • Studies current trends and advancements in health informatics and the CIS and determines their relevance for Driscoll Children’s Health.
  • Provide ongoing review and development of alerts, order sets and protocols within CIS.
  • Monitors and responds to safety issues related to the CIS.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Regularly communicates changes to and challenges with our CIS to clinicians and increases their awareness of resources for support and progress with their issues and concerns.
  • Advises Driscoll Children’s leaders and committees on subjects related to the CIS.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Applicants must possess an MD or DO, followed by successful completion of an accredited residency program.
  • Knowledge of public policy initiatives with the ability to bridge new care delivery models into clinical practice with the right technology solutions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Five years of clinical informatics/IT experience
  • Experience with Epic EHR preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Board Certified in Medical Specialty
  • Current unrestricted license as an MD or DO in State of Texas
  • Certification as an Epic physician builder
  • Board Certified in Clinical Informatics
